Title: Exhaust dent feature
Post by: GTI_Ant on 27 July 2023, 22:23
Just received my CS after almost 24 months wait  everything seems fine however when I had a look underneath I noticed this dent in the exhaust near the rear suspension which I initially thought might be some form of transport damage.  I was worried that this could impede the exhaust flow but it seems that another GTI at the dealership also had this feature (the sent a photo that shows it) so I’m guessing they have to manually reshape the pipe to get it to fit.  Has anyone else noticed this?  It seems odd to have to make a controlled bend in the pipe in production.

Likely to be a design feature to make the gas flow through the exhaust do what they want it to do...

Looks like damage to me can't think of any reason why that would be a design feature best get it reported to dealer before they blame you for it.

I did report it to the dealer straight away.  They checked another GTi and it has the same “feature”!

But do they all have that ‘feature’? It could well be a feature of that particular dealership, or maybe the transport they use!

Yes that’s what I’m trying to ascertain!  It would be good to know if this is present on all of these cars or just recent ones or whatever.

I’ll have a look at mine in the morning, not a CS, but worth a look anyway, I do seem to remember the mk7 having a slightly flattened pipe at near that point, but yours just looks like a ding.

I swapped my wheels front to back today, and I can confirm, that my GTI does not have this ‘feature’, to be honest it looks like a ding, doesn’t look at all like it should be there, and indeed, if you think about it’s location, there is no rational reason why it would be there from factory.

Thank you so much for looking.  It's the bend downstream from you, the one where your pipe changes colour, and I can just about see a flattened part of the pipe?

Cheers

The only explanation I can think of with any possible rational for this is that they required more back pressure from the exhaust system, hence the 'dent' and could be there for emission purposes? But surely it's too far back to have any impact on the cat?

No it’s not flattened, it’s just the picture, the pipe was the same circumference throughout that picture.

Check out this Deutsche Auto Parts video,
https://youtu.be/MNM40jiSGuo
I just remembered that they’d fitted a CS rear silencer in one of their videos, and thought I’d have another look, I don’t see any dent on this one either, relevant parts of the video start at around 4:20 minutes.

OK thanks, I agree nothing to see there.  It’s strange; the one the dealership had clearly showed the same feature so mine isn’t the only one with this.

I think you'd have to compare a similar age one to yours if you want to see if its correct.

Either that or read the part number off of it and compare it to a VW spare.

I think it is deliberate.... and its a recent modification.

Remember loads of parts on these cars evolve over time - fixing issues we don't perceive.

Or the dealership have put the dent in their own cars pipe to avoid having to fork out for a new exhaust, as it probably wouldn't be covered by warranty.  Surely not!

Are there not any other dealerships you can go and have a look at that have a Clubsport in stock to put your mind at rest?
There are 76 for sale on auto trader, I don't know where you're located, maybe some of those are worth a visit.

My wife took delivery of her CS yesterday, 10 delivery miles on it, I've been underneath this afternoon and it does indeed have a dent.

I also note that due to the monsoon we drove home in our exhaust is scruffy already.

Had to give the little man with a hammer in Wolfsburg a job rather than make him redundant.

GTI _Ant, Maybe that shadow you pointed out on the picture of my exhaust is actually a dent, even though the wheel was removed, I couldn’t directly see that point from the wheel well due to the trailing arm, and viewed from underneath I couldn’t get particularly close due to the trolley jack being there and it was raining at the time so didn’t want to lay on my back! I’m now curious however, and will have another better look, it could of course be something that is CS specific, and not present on the 245 GTI.

I think they’re actually the same exhaust with only the back box and tips being different.  Also the “feature” is probably more obvious on a shiny new exhaust before it has a patina of corrosion and road dirt on it.  It’s comforting to know that it’s not just my car though and it must have been done at the factory.
