Title: What keys come as standard with a late 2019 GTI?
Post by: KieranD79 on 18 July 2023, 13:08
Hi everyone,

I have a really odd and first world problem style question.

I put a deposit down on a late 2019 GTI Performance over the weekend but I noticed that one key has the metal loop at the bottom with 'GTI' on it and the other is just a standard black key.

Was this standard on all of them?  Starting to think the standard key is a replacement and feeling a little short changed!   :undecided:

Thanks all.

Mines an early MY2019, both keys have the metal ‘GTI’ hoop.
Wouldn’t worry to much if the car ticks all your boxes as long as both keys work. I’ve only ever used the one key in 4.5 years.

My car’s a 2020 Polo GTI Plus which has the same type of key fobs as the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf GTI.

When I bought my car, the key fobs came with both the GTI chrome and the black plastic end caps (two of each) so I could choose whether to make them GTI-specific or generic VW. I’ve got the black plastic end cap on the key fob I use most often as the plastic cap is a little smaller than the GTI chrome one and it fits comfortably in my silicone key fob case. With the chrome cap fitted, the fob doesn’t fit so well in the silicone key case.

@KieranD79; maybe the previous owner also used a silicone key fob case, hence why one of the key fobs for the car you’re buying has the black plastic end cap fitted.

Mine came with just the chrome, can’t see for the life of how you’d change it?

you need to take the cap off the key and unscrew a small grub screw. The end then comes off and you put the GTi chrome one on. The screws are incredibly soft though so need to be careful.

@Adam T7; YouTube video at the link below shows how to change it;

Everyday is a school day.
It’s peeing down here and I’m a bit bored😄

Edit - just ordered a replacement chrome cap from eBay - mines a bit scratched.

Well you do indeed learn something new everyday!

I hadn’t thought about it being something you could change but it actually makes total sense.

Thanks everyone!
