Hi
I usually add 3/4 litre of 5w30 oil between 10k services and speaking to my Vw specialist, he says they use 5w40.
My engines on 70k.
Does anyone use the thicker oil to reduce consumption?
Cheers

Mine’s on 22K and I’ve been using Millers 5W40 Nanodrive at the suggestion of the local Independent Specialist. I’ve noticed no oil loss ever on the car since I’ve had it from new (12/2018) with either 5W30 or 5W40.
Oil and filter get changed every 6 months and I only do about 4.5K miles pa,so probably not a fair comparison to answer your specific question
5W40 is a recommended VW spec so can’t do any harm.

Yes. Thin oil is used to increase fuel consumption and reduce emissions. Thicker good quality oil will reduce wear.
I use 10/60 in my old S2 and she loves it.

My mk6 has always had 5w30 and now on 97k and still does not use oil which is changed every 6 months with filter.
