Hi there. I was thinking about doing a couple of mods to my 1997 GTi 8v and was wondering fi you guys could point me in the right direction. I'm after about another 15-20 bhp, preferably higher up the rev range as I think it would make my beast really fly. I'd rather avoid any Max Power conutations whatsoever, so big bore exhasts and anything else you can hear from 3 streets away are pretty much out. However, if it keeps quiet at low revs then starts blaring higher up, I can't say I'd be too fussed.
Realistically I'm looking at spending up to ?400, altho if this figure could be vastly reduced I'd be a happy Mk3 owner.
Also I was wondering what effect the mods would have on the car's reliability. It hasn't skipped a beat since I bought it but it has 95k miles on the clock. should I be worried about blowing something up?

Induction kit , sports exhaust, fast road cam, chip, that should give you an extra 15bhp. The car should still be just as reliable with those mods, as long as you don't buy a really wild cam, just a fast road one.

A Rolling road remap took my car to 131BHP ;D
I have also got a Milltek cat back exhaust system, nice sound not too noisey.

I'd say a decent sports exhaust and an induction kit - you'd be surprised how much extra you'll get out of your car. I just had these mods fitted to my Mk3 8v, and it's really picked up. The exhaust system is jetex, as is the induction kit. Sounds great too!

Any recomondations on where to get a rolling road done and how many much am I looking at?
-
definately replace the exhaust cat back. don't get induction kit. kent gs22h cam and vernier pulley. then like rocky says- rolling road set up and remap. job done. but will cost more than ?400

Get K&N induction kits, better throttle response and a nice noise :D

give me some info where to go ;D

AmD in Bicester will charge you ?250 + VAT to rolling road remap your car it will take around 3 hours. It took my car to 131BHP & you really notice the throttle response. Tel:01869 323205

Right, I've decided on a Rolling road remap and a K&N 57i Induction Kit. By my reckoning that should put me on 135-140bhp which is plenty for now. I shall probably fit a new exhaust later on as I have not long changed the back box I have, so it shall have to do for now. I have one or two more general questions tho.
1) How will the above mods change the characteristics of the car? I'm not too concerned about the handling, as it already feels like it has less power than grip and cornering ability, but what about traction? Will my brakes suddenly feel vastly underendowed (I suspect not as I assume they are identical to the 16v and even VR6 brakes)? How about the engine note? Will it get a bit more characterful?
2) There appear to be two 57i Induction Kits for my car. Do I need the Mass Air Sensor version or the LE Flow Meter version for a 1997 8v?
3) Will the mods help the smug smile dissapear from Mk2 owners who attempt to have a go?
