Title: Delamination of centre console
Post by: Rudedog on 25 June 2023, 22:15
Anyone had this on their GTi?

Yesterday all was ok.

Today went to do a weekend wash and a quick vacuum of the front carpets, opened up and my eyes went straight to a bubble in the matt finish right next the EPB!!

Inside car was really hot something I unfortunately can't avoid on my drive.

Utterly devastated as I'm uber careful with the interior, I've had experience of this sort of thing in my older Golf's but I thought that had all been sorted in a 7.5?
So it seems the corner of the trim where you put your fingers in to operate the EPB has lifted, on closer inspection there is more lifting along the edge of the rollback cupholder (don't use the cupholder apart from a few coins and a cloth for my sunglasses).

Don't think I can live with this.

I still have 8 months left on my five year extended warrantee.... what do all you think my chances are of a successful claim?
I just know they'll try and say I either caught it or used some 'unapproved' cleaning solution, both untrue but I can't prove either.
Any ideas how much the part is roughly and how much it might be to fit?

Nightmare, proper had been nicked a long time ago and the heat finally got it.

In terms of warranty, interior isn't covered under the terms of it. But the interior parts shouldn't be that expensive given they're the same in an se, match, gti or R. Can't remember what I replaced before on the gti but it was sub £30 but a silver trim in the edition 30 was £145, so you can get lucky.

Ok at least if it's not covered then I won't bust a gut to get an appointment and jump through the hoops....

After I wrote this I did look up a new replacement one on eBay and it seems that the matt section is part of the whole centre console so it all has to be replaced... is that right?

A new part seems to be around £100 and then fitting on top - might try the dealer parts first, not sure if I'm confident enough to do it myself if all the buttons have to come out.

Just my luck as I think this is only bit of trim in the 7.5 GTi that is still covered with this matt plastic - one thing about the piano black trim it won't start peeling off in a few years time.

Also very careful on my interior care and also have no choice about parking on a south facing driveway that gets the sun most of the day. Just checked the trim in question and nothing apparent at the moment but will be extra careful not to scratch it. Never use the cup holders (not in the best of places IMO) but do use the pull back storage cubby as home for a couple of usb cables that I will now stick in the storage under the HEVAC controls.

Have one of those twist and fold reflective shields, and cabin is cooler than in direct heat, though it still gets warm, but it does kill the direct heat to the interior parts, and you never have any feeling that something maybe under threat from sun exposure, they are worth a try, the twist and fold ones i have fold to a small circle in couple of seconds and throw behind the seat into the rear, and grab when you know car is going to be parked in heat for sometime.

I’ve got the climate screen that’s supposed to reflect UV and some infra red light but not sure, also got 90% tints on all rear glass, but it still gets warm, not as bad as previous car (Discovery 4) that used to get so hot you could hardly breathe in it until the air con did it’s stuff. May look at a windscreen reflector though👍

Yes, had the same on my TCR, and it maybe would have had some anti damage effect and there is no need, but dash used to still get pretty hot and the reflector does give good offset if car parked out for an extended time in extreme heats like last summer, car is still pretty warm when get in, but dash is not at level of frying an egg as a result of the protection.

Not helpful for the majority of the people but I just forget to close the sunroof and it self regulates, only downside is I did have a spider fall on me before.

With the torrential downfall here yesterday afternoon, you would have had more than a spider fall on you.

We had it as well, rain doesn't get in when it's just lifted and drained lines are clean. A option for the majority would probably be wind deflectors and leaving the window open crack in the heat.
