Title: Replacement Key
Post by: BillSan on 07 June 2023, 21:48
A nightmare situation that we all dread, my wife went on a school trip with the kids today and has lost our car key while she was out of town.  Called the venue and the coach company and neither have found it.  I had to go home from work to fetch the spare to get the car home.

As it's a lease car I'll need to get a replacement key from VW and possibly get the spare reprogrammed too.

Does anyone know what that is likely to cost?  I suspect it's going to be in the zone where its not worth losing NCD and paying a £500 excess so it's going to be an expensive mistake.

Our Cupra Born (which seemingly uses the same key type as the  ID3 and Golf 8, and has the same ridiculously easy blade key release button) lost a key lately (I was left with just the blade attached to the house keys).

Cost is £187 for the key itself and another £120 to program it.

Thanks monkeyhanger.  That sounds roughly what I'd expect although I feared it might be a lot higher.  I'm going to wait a few days in case the venue finds the lost key, but 99% sure I'll be at my local dealer next week to get fleeced.

I'll let you all know what they charge.

In the meantime, keep your key pockets zipped everyone!!

Those rubber key skins that fit over the key make that blade key release button far harder to accidentally press.

I'm pleased to say that the ThinkTank science park in Birmingham found our lost key on Friday and we have now got it back.

It saves my calling dealers to get a replacement and maybe £400-£500 so as you can imagine I'm very happy today.
