Title: Start / Stop not working? SOLVED !!
Post by: TonyJ on 27 May 2023, 14:14
Hi all,  some advice needed ....

I've had my new Mk8 GTD for about a month now. I cannot recall the engine stopping at all via the stop/start system during this time.
With my previous T-Roc and Golf, the engine stopped regularly at traffic lights etc., but it has never happened with my new GTD.

I've checked that the start/stop system is activated via the infotainment screen - and I know that the engine will not stop if there is significant electrical drain (eg. aircon, lights etc.)

Any thoughts? Anyone else have the same problem?

Thanks

Putting the car into Eco mode rather than comfort or Sport lowers the bar for the stop/start system so I'd say put it into Eco.

In fact if the car is in Sport mode the Stop/start is deactivated anyway, so that could be it.   Check what mode you have it in.

Thanks for the ideas. Tried these, but no good. No matter what mode etc., the start/stop does not cut in.

Think it might be a trip to my local dealer !

A trip to the dealer? this is a good thing, not a bad thing! stop/start is a waste of time IMO. i disabled it permanently as its only there for emissions etc. if you do want it activated, it could be that your battery is on the way out. Do you have access to a scanner to pull fault codes?

Totally agree, first thing I do after starting the car is turn the damned thing off.

Is it dsg or manual?

If its a manual it needs to be out of gear and foot completely off of the clutch

It's DSG.

I take the points that not everyone likes stop/start, but I was used to it on previous VWs and perhaps if it's not working it's a sign of another problem??

Stop/start is a pain in the rear. Wish i could deactivate mine permanently.
If it can be done, how do you do it?

Sounds like the battery isn’t fully charged. First thing I’d do is check with a scan tool.

I don't think it can be done with obd11 any more actually on the mk8.

Conditions from the manual:

Quote
Vehicles with an automatic gearbox

When the vehicle is stationary, press and hold the brake pedal. The engine is stopped.
Take your foot off the brake pedal, or depress the accelerator, to restart the engine.
Important preconditions for automatic engine switch-off

The driver is wearing their seat belt.
The driver door is closed.
The bonnet is closed.
The factory-fitted towing bracket is not attached electrically to a trailer.
A minimum engine temperature has been reached.
The vehicle has been moved since the engine was last switched off.
For vehicles with Climatronic: the temperature inside the vehicle is within the pre-set temperature range.
The defrost function of the air conditioning system is not switched on.
The charging state of the vehicle battery is sufficient.
The temperature of the vehicle battery is not too low or too high.
The vehicle is not on a steep incline.
For vehicles with an automatic gearbox: the front wheels are not angled too sharply.
The windscreen heating is not switched on.
Reverse gear is not engaged.
The park assist system (Park Assist) system is not active.
When the conditions for automatic engine switch-off are only fulfilled when the vehicle is stationary, the engine can also switch off subsequently:

When the driver creates the required conditions by performing an action, e.g. by switching off the defrost function.
If the  button in the centre console is pressed twice  .
When selector lever position P is selected in vehicles with an automatic gearbox.

Oh and sport mode also turns it off!

Do you have anything fitted to the car that saps the battery, such as a dashcam with parking monitoring? I have a Dashcam with parking monitoring, set to cut out when the battery voltage falls to 12.3V. This is below the standard battery voltage threshold to allow stop start (in addition to engine oil temp thresholds.

So if you don't have a well topped up battery and warm oil, stop-start won't kick in - that makes stop-start kicking in a rare event for journeys less than 6 miles or if you have a dashcam nibbling at your battery capacity.

Thanks to all for your replies !

By chance, I solved it today.

Until today, it has been quite warm and I have had the climate temperature set at "LO", sometimes with the aircon on and sometimes off.
However, today it was cooler, so I set a temperature of 17C, and the start/stop started working !

After a little investigation, it seems that if it set to "LO" , the start/stop will not work, but set it to a temperature, and it works !  It works whether or not the aircon is on.

This should perhaps be added to the list of conditions as shown in the user manual !

My missus is always turning her’s off - drives me to distraction.
