the bro-in-law just brought an fto gr for 6k , anyone know the spec before i offer to race him in my valver?????
-
im not entirely sure but i know its not incredibly fast, 2.0 v6 and somethin in the region of 8-8.5 seconds but it has quite a lot of torque so will probably be quicker from 30 through the gears, plus also supposed to be a bit sh!t round corners. :)
-
i've just found out its 180 bhp. f**k!! hoping its more topend seems that the 0-60 time is slower
-
i take it back 7.5 seems to be more acurate and apparently good for 140mph, weighs in at 1199kgs
-
a bit heavier then! you never know if i remove the seats and dash ect i might just whop his ass ;D i reckon i could hold upto about 70 then he'd just piss off into the distance!!!
-
Well just take him somewhere twisty, my mates nissan 300 3.0 v6 cant keep up with my 16v on some roads, just a shame he flys past on straight roads. >:(
-
I still can't get my head around how a 15 year old car can still outhandle fto's and other newer peformance cars, and also how a 180 bhp car has virtually the same 0-60 times :-\ it seems to me that without turbo's and superchargers all these new "hot hatches" are a waste of money!!
-
The mk2, particularly the 16v was an exception car for its time.
-
I remember being in his nissan coming back from football with r mates following behind and as we came over this bridge and u turn left while going over and he lost the back end now we were only goin bout 40 and apparently his rear tyre was less than inch off clipping the kerb according to the lads behind and weve been over at like 60 in my golf no problems.
-
four words
"power to weight ratio"

yup it was that. it was the King of Hot Hatches throughout its life.
race the guy and see what happens.

I had a race with one in my celica GT4 a couple ofyears ago - it wasn't as quick - but it could fair shift! as much as I hate to say it, unless your golf is a little quicker than the norm, I wouldn't go racing him on an open road. Try and find something a bit twisty - see if you can out handle it!
-
it was 153bhp on the rolling road before i drilled the airbox ;D(cheers guys for that one!) but i still can't beleive my old golf would out handle it,its done 105'000 and is still on the origional shocks ect. but theres only one thing to do-race the f**k*r!!!!
anyway i can still fall back on the fact that mine cost ?650 and he's cost 6Kplus ;)
-
If it only cost 6k, it must be a grey import then - (square number plate on the back gives it away) in which case it will probably be running a modified engine or higher than a standard legit import on the BHP front, as the Jap import cars tend to be of a higher spec and power than their legitimate counterparts - be aware of this before you go laying down the gauntlet!!!
-
I keep finding conflicting advice for these cars, some places say there 4cylinder some say v6 so im guessing there were 2 engines available one running 7.5 and the other about 8 so check which model his is, if its 4 cylinder id fancy your chances. :)

If its an import it might have a chronic 5th gear.

Tin - whats a chronic fifth gear?

Tin - whats a chronic fifth gear?
some jap performance cars are limited to 112mph. and they do it by having a really nasty 5th.

ALL Jap domestic cars are limited to 112 mph.
This limiter can be removed though . . . . .

you may have seen in another thread.. i was considering an fto (and before that a celica. not gt4 tho.. insurance was crazy for one of them.. and before that a mk2 mr2 t-bar.. lol) plumped for the golf tho.. coz it fits my needs the best.
-
I think you would have enjoyed the celica especially a GT4.
I used to get 18 MPG, tyres would last at least 8000 miles, and the oil was ?60 (trade) on a change!!
bloody expensive to run! stick with a golf - its much easier on the pocket.
As for the "chronic fifth gear" - I've never experienced it on any of the imports I drove (150 mph on the Clock from the GT4, with a bit left to go!). But I think reputable importers remove them.
My mate's selling his MR2 because he reckons it is too tail happy in the wet!! I think he just need to slow down maybe ;)
I have more fun in my cab than I ever did in the GT4 though
-
I was actually torn between the Celica or the Golf all those years ago. Made the right choice as Celicas are going down with age. There are no good ones left, and they are rare as anything on the roads nowadays.

My mr2 was great in the wet ??? but mine was a mk1, wish i still had it now :( would look nice parked next me golf ;D
-
drove my mates g reg celica gti-r a few weeks ago handling was great but didn't think acceleration was in the valvers league, but i loved looking down that bonnet with the lights up :)
-
was the GTi-R the import with rear wheel steering?
I drove a prelude with rear wheel steering - it felt like the back end was sliding out on roundabouts - didn't inspire me with much confidence!!
-
get him on a nice bit of stright road. bout 4mile, you should get 135, 140 out of it, i did mine out 1, ;D. ok so it needed a full rebuld a few months later but it did it!!
-
never got to drive a celica... but i did drive a mk2 mr2 t-bar last summer, and I drove a tiptronic FTO a few months back..
definitely prefered the mr2.. but i wanted more seats. so that's why i was looking at celica's/fto's.. love my mk3 valver now tho :)
-
Thats a very nice motor you got there mr. overseer :o

Currently drive an Accord Type R which will be getting sold early next year as new house / baby etc on way. Hence why I'm returning to my routes to buy a Mk II Golf Gti.
The Accord is a great car - Fast in a straight line and highly competent through the bends (The LSD helps with that). It's also darned good looking (IMO) with it's nice subtle factory kit and it's purply black paint. Also the Recarros inside are the best seats I've ever had, and it has 4 door practicality as well. Rarity factor is high too.
However - in a way it will be a relief when it's gone. Petrol is to be 98 RON only so Shell Potimax have done very nicely out of me thankyou very much. The car is quite valuable and I'm paranoid about where I leave it. Oil is fully synthetic and it seems to drink quite a lot of the Castrol RS as well. I was that paranoid about something going wrong with the cambelt tensioners or gearbox synchro ( a common trait on Accords) that I bought an aftermarket warranty for ?275.00. Also insurance isn't the cheapest either.
Finally build quality is not what I expected it to be. Sure, it's acceptable but its not Germanic. I would hand on heart say that my previous Golf and 2 previous 3 series BMW's were better built especially considering their age versus the age of the Accord.
Jap cars have there plus points (VTEC engines being the best one I think ;D), but would I buy another.............hmmm, not sure, probably not.
