Title: New Mk6 gti owner, throttle position sensor fault
Post by: KMaynard on 13 May 2023, 15:07
Hey folks, about 3 weeks ago I bought an 11 plate gti, it drove fine for around a week then I started having issues with it. The EPC light kept coming on whilst driving. Sometimes causing me to lose all power, once I restarted the car it was fine.

I got the codes scanned and there was heaps of problems with it, around 11 codes over all, I think alot of these were codes from an accident it had prior to my ownership.

I had it in a garage for 3 days and they sorted a lot of issues out and just general things that needed doing, as well as things I asked them to do to try and sort the above issues.

It's had new coil packs and plugs, new throttle body rear disks and pads as they were shagged, new coil springs as two were snapped. Turns out the car is a bit of a lemon. This all cost me around £1200 inc labour. On the drive home from the garage, the issue happened again.

I've just had the codes scanned again and I will attach a picture of the two codes that are left, does anyone have any idea how to solve this?

 Cheers.

Have you looked the codes up on VCDS wiki? This normally indicates probable causes.

I noticed your post on the facebook pages.
I was thinking throttle pedal fault back then not sure if anyone else said it or what the vcdswiki says

I haven't, im not sure what the actual codes are as I'm new to using VCDS and reading codes. Would it be the P0121 and P0222?

Cheers for the help.

Check wiring to 10 [g188]
From the two codes it maybe the throttle body flap is sticking or faulty or wiring issue but its only got listed as happening once. It may simply need taking apart and cleaning if its gunked up or it may need readapted on vcds for some reason. The procedure to do it use to be on the vcds site. If you use Google to search for it. There's probably a way to test it too using vcds measuring blocks. That I expect too is on the vcds site somewhere.
Probably best to search for a vw specialist in your area as they have probably come across this a few times. Unlike me.

Agree with Snoopy. Sounds like a throttle body or wiring issue. Since you have had a new throttle body fitted I would look at the wiring and connectors first.

I missed that bit. Ask who ever fitted it if they did an adaption?
Watch below for why and how to do it.

As far as I know, we did a throttle body alignment yesterday. So I don't think that's the cause, I'm booked in at auto electrician on Monday so I'll see what he has to say.

Cheers for all your help folks, appreciate it.

Beginning to seriously regret my decision in buying this car, auto electrician seems to now think it's an ECU problem, so having to replace that fully .

Atleast a grand

It was a possible outcome looking at the reasons for the fault codes on line but did not think it likely. A real bu**er.

The other issue is what if this doesn't solve it? What's my next steps from there. Cars cost me around £2500 in the month that I've had it already. Can't afford to keep dumping money into it.

It was the ECU, different ones gone in and everything has been ok for two days.

I had the same issue and it was the accelerator pedal itself. Changed it and the alarms went away. Got one for £30 of eBay
