so which models come with self parking? they all have park assist, but i assume its an extra that you need to add on/pay for?

I had an early'ish Mini which had self parking in the sense that it spun the steering wheel when you wanted to parallel park. Used it once but it's a gimmick. Then had a 530e which spun the wheel and controlled the gears, accelerator and brake. Used it once but it's a gimmick. Nothing that a competent driver couldn't do and it's very risk averse. It'll only park you into easy spots that Miss Daisy wouldn't struggle with. Waste of money and you'd be better off with a sunroof.

Agree that Park Assist is a gimmick, and using it to parallel park also brings with it the risk damaging your alloys.
Park Assist uses the vehicles in front and behind the intended parking space as reference points; if those vehicles have parked badly (e.g. they’ve mounted their wheels on the pavement or have the rim of their alloys touching the kerb) then Park Assist will attempt to park your car (badly) in the same way.

Park Assist is self parking. The models that come with it will have had that box ticked in the options list and are easy to spot as they have extra wheel arch sensors as well as the regular ones on the bumpers.
I ordered it on a GTI ten years ago as it was a novelty thing and a cheap option.
It is a gimmick in most conditions except where one has parked in a suitable spot only to return to find some eejit has parked too close to your front or rear to enable you to get out of said space easily. In that scenario it’ll get you out of the space with no drama.
I’ve had about six or seven cars since then and none of them had park assist, it’s not been missed.

Contrary to previous comments, I find self parking very useful.
I had it on a Touran, Skoda Superb and on my current 7.5 GTI.
In tight spots that I would hesitate to use, the car takes over and park in one go.
It was especially useful on the big boat Superb.
Nock on wood, no curb scraping to date.
-
I’d just plain not use too tight a spot in case some other moron without park assist scraped my bumper.
Mind you I’m notorious for circling round like a hungry shark looking for that Goldilocks parking space.

 Exonian, I like your understanding of ‘eejit’ or the plural ‘eejits’, not idiots. Very Norn Irn. 👍

I had a Norn Irish grandma, plus never underestimate the reach and influence of Irish comedians who just have the greatest delivery

I ticked it, not used it.
Have it on our other car but on that one it does everything including the brake/acceleration, only used as gimmick in completely empty car park to test it.
Would not recommend.
-
I’d imagine on some cars it would be really useful to have, especially taller cars.
Gimmick or not, it’s only £215 as an option so worth ticking.
As said before, not an essential if considering a used car purchase.
-
Total gimmick unless you really can't park. As it tracks the cars surrounding it and not the kerb, it could mince wheels up against the kerb depending how some of the other cars are parked (haven't done this myself, but seen the aftermath on a colleague's car (Cupra Leon), Had 3 cars with it, just tried it twice on one of the cars. Would not spec it out of choice.
-
With dipping mirrors and a rear camera, a bit irrelevant IMO.
-
Didn’t bother specing this on my golf but have it on an A3, so assume it’s the same system. It works every time and parks perfectly, never hits the curb. If I’m feeling lazy it’s great.

If you use it to parallel park between 2 cars and one of those cars is up on the kerb then it's highly likely the system will kerb those alloys as it uses the 2 cars for all reference points.

Like I said, never been a problem so far. Haven’t tried it with someone parked up on the curb though, will have to see what happens!

thanks, but, I'm pretty sure mine does not have self parking, after pressing the parking menu, the only thing that shows is the park assist sensors picture which tells me if I'm too close to anything. :undecided:
