Hi guys,
Does anyone know if the actual exhaust sound/volume changes between the Comfort and Sport settings?
I know the awful Soundaktor device changes but on our factory non-valved exhausts, how can the sound change between modes?
-
It seems to on my Clubsport. Probably a slightly more aggressive fuelling map. Or my imagination . One of those.

Interesting-I wonder if that is just a Clubby thing?
Anyone know for certain?

Even without exhaust valves, you can have some impact on exhaust note in a few ways. First off, you can simply raise the idle speed, but that doesn’t effect the sound under load. You can also change timing, which will effect sound across the board. Neither will be as different as a valved exhaust though, and you wouldn’t typically change timing for sound reasons.

No its not just a clubby thing. Its definitely louder in sport mode and you also get down shift blips and even the engine sound setting (in individual mode) does effect the exhaust sound...
Not obnoxious but definitely throatier.
The clubby is louder still because of its different pipe

The Soundaktor in my mk7 R actually sounded quite alright - a bit like a Subaru Impreza type note. However in the mk8 GTI CS it sounds a bit like the engine has some loose components!

BTW somewhere on here we talked about this before and someone from VW actually had confirmed its definitely a feature that the exhaust note changes... obviously within current EU regulations regarding noise tho :(

Thanks guys, some interesting stuff there.
I'm going for the Scorpion downpipe with cat and OPF delete with a custom 'Stage 1+' map.
With all of that, I'm hoping for some control over volume and it would be useful if it is through the mode selections.

Really looking forward to seeing how this goes mate!!

Me too!
The downpipe is on back order until 4th April so hopefully it'll all be completed early April.
The place I've chosen does a before and after dyno so I should have some figures too.

Be good to see the figures on this any predictions for either? Always make more power than VW figures anyway std
Std .mk8 gti is seeing 330ish on just stage 1 software alone according to racingline and unicorn.

Not trying to be a party pooper, but wouldn't an OPF delete be a bit of an MOT issue?
I appreciate that OPF's and MOT's probably hasn't come up yet (don't think its been 3 years yet?) but...
I am actually asking because I quite fancy giving it a go myself once my car is end of warranty...

I'm presuming it would be Fred, and likely complicated to reverse for MOT and put back straight after (software/sensor considerations). Having no OPF makes quite the difference though. My old 2018 Polo GTI+ came with no OPF from the factory, my wife's 2019 model came with it as standard fit - the 2 sounded so different, and mine was a bit better on the mpg too.

Be aware it might also have insurance implications.
It’s likely that all car insurance policies will have some form of roadworthiness clause and removing the OPF / GPF from a car that had one fitted from new technically renders the car unroadworthy, so gives an insurance company a good reason to void the policy and decline to pay claims. There’s also the legal implications of driving a technically unroadworthy car on public roads.
It could be argued that an OPF / GPF delete will never be discovered by the insurance company if they’re not told (it’s a modification, and there’s also a requirement in car insurance policies to inform insurance companies of any modifications, so not telling them could also void the policy). However, if a car with an OPF / GPF delete is involved in an accident and the insurance company inspects that car before authorising any repairs / claim payment, it could prove costly for the car owner, especially if passengers or other members of the public are injured in the accident - compensation for injuries can be very expensive.

Some interesting comments.
I spoke with my insurance company and they actually had a box to tick labelled Stage1/Eco upgrade.
My premium increased by £98.00 and I was not asked anything about power gains which seemed rather odd.
I'm still deliberating on declaring the OPF/Cat delete as that will probably be far more complex but I have found some companies offering 'modified cars' policies so a few calls will be made over the coming days.
On the MOT point, I have a chap that carries out the full MOT test but when it comes to the emissions, he puts the probe into the exhaust of his own car to record the live readings.
I've used him since my Evo days and as he says, the MOT is merely a snapshot on that particular day-who knows what mods are carried out immediately after?
