Title: Misting on dampers
Post by: ianmb on 26 February 2023, 10:06
Had my 4th year service and mot,car has done 16000 miles and has developed misting on rear damper.
Vw showed me a TPI that says as it is it is not covered under the extended warranty until it start’s actually dripping.
VW say misting is normal has anybody else found this ,I do not really want to leave it until this happens.

If misting is normal, why have they flagged it?

Exactly what I thought I have cleaned the damper and will monitor over the coming weeks,VW trying to get out of a warranty claim again!!!.

Misting is mot speak for minor oil leak. It should not happen on such a new, low mileage car.
I would put my foot down and insist they are replaced.

If misting is normal, why have they flagged it?

For the same reason they flag tyre tread and brake pad wear- well before the item is due for replacement.

I was told there was some misting on one of mine at last service- and was also told that was usual.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

You could argue that almost every component on a used car is “ on its way out “ so should be replaced now.

I doubt you’ll get very far with VW if their official line is that it’s usual, and has to be leaking before they replace.

I've been told the same, and that it's usual. I think I was told at an MOT. Later MOTs have not raised the point, so make of that what you will.
