Title: Mannol oil
Post by: symonh2000 on 20 February 2023, 18:10
Is anyone using this in their cars?

It is £58 for 20L (with a discount) and is VW 504.00 and 507.00 approved.

It is also BMW LL-04 approved so can go into my Bimmer.

(I ran the cheaper version, energy premium LL-04 in my older 330d for a couple of years without issues)

The VW is a standard GTI PP

I've been using Mannol oil for a couple of years without issue. It's in my wife's 2010 tdi passat, my boys 1.2 petrol polo and our daily hack, a W registration tdi pd 115 passat. Also used it in my A2 tdi ( now sold).
My only concerns are the apparent Russian connection and some bad press in Germany.
I tend to use Fuchs oils in my cherished classics.

If it meets the spec there's nothing wrong with it, it just depends how long you're keeping the car. If you can reduce running costs while meeting spec there's no issues.

Personally I prefer to use Millers as they use an additional chemical added to help reduce wear (can't remember the name), but this makes it more expensive.

Thanks guys. I might have a drive down to my local TPS near Oxford and see if they will sell me a 20l drum of Quantum 3, I found some on their site for £68 for a 20L drum.

That is also approved for VW and BMW and as it is made by Fuchs it should be slightly better. (Golf has Fuchs in it right now)

I have no worries about using a cheaper oil in a cheaper car, but when you are running more expensive vehicles like ours it seems to be worth spending a bit more for peace of mind unless there is a certainty that no harm would be done.

I am planning on 6000 mile oil changes on both cars and both take over 5 litres so buying individual 5 litre bottles works out quite expensive if you factor in a few top ups along the way.

6k oil changes in itself is the best thing you can do for your car, using the best brand is less important. Make a list of brands you are happy to use and keep an eye out throughout the year for sales. Opie Oils typically have great sales and offer forum discount!

That’s why I went on a vw service plan at £20 a month you don’t notice it coming out, then you can pay for other oil changes at independents etc just buy a vw service schedule book to keep the stamps in. I average about 2 oil changes a year at this point but it was 4 in my old GTD, but my GTD sounded as smooth as my GTI when i sold it.

I also change oil every 6 months irrespective of mileage (I only do about 4,500 pa) and use Millers Nanodrive 5W40. Probably total overkill but keeps me happy.

They also do a Haldex oil which cross references with the VW stuff and is cheaper than Febi, a lot cheaper.
Using it on a VAQ diff oil change very soon. Even comes in nice metal cans which are recyclable.
