Hi everyone.
I currently own a 2017 mk7.5 Golf R and am looking to replace it with a GTi.
This is both for mildly reduced running costs and for a car that has a bit more spirit and character.
Before i purchased my R, i did a lot of research and knew what each generation had as standard, what changes came with the facelift and then later with the different engine configurations etc etc.
Unfortunately i am not up to speed with the GTi.
Is there a guide or link anyone can share so i can see the options, changes and differences between the mk7 models.
Is a 2013 GTi the same as a 2016? Did the 'facelift' just add the digital dash, 7 speed DSG box and update infotainment? As i cant see any visual differences to my untrained eye (unlike the facelift on the R which changed the front bumper a fair bit).
Once my R sells, i will have a pot of cash to spend on a GTi, so would like to know if i am gaining anything by buying a younger car, rather than an older one (servicing, mileage, owners, conditions not included)
Many thanks to any replies :)

hi
Are you after a GTi or GTi Performance?
Our 19 plate 7.5 Performance has a bump in BHP compared to our old mk7 performance 245 compared to 220 i think.
Some of the visuals.
The front bumper is different in the side gills by the lights and the subtle profile of the bumper.
The rear lower trim (valance) is bigger.
The exhaust rear box is different and the pipe tips are bigger.
The exhaust noise is louder and deeper than the mk7.
Others will be along with the details of turbo or engine differences

thanks for the reply!
Currently, i'm not sure which i am after.
I could spend 13-14k and get something older, or spend 18-19k and get something newer. I guess at the time i will attempt to get the best bang for buck!
The changes you mention, was that once they did the facelift? or are those differences between a PP car and a non?

The visual changes mentioned are for the facelift. For the facelift, in terms of power, both performance and non-performance models got a power bump, with the performance pack being the one with the aforementioned 245HP.
The facelift performance pack also comes with LSD and Golf R brakes. Oh, and a red boot badge

Here’s a selection of mk 7 and mk7.5 price and spec brochures that’ll enable you to compare spec changes over the years.
If you try an internet search on ’xxxx VW Golf price and spec brochure’ - substitute xxxx with the year you’re interested in and you may find pre-2016, 2017 and 2018 price and spec brochures.

My previous Mk 7.5, 2018 non PP GTI had 230bhp, non opf, with a 6 speed DSG. Think it had the bigger piped louder exhaust too. It had the digital dash, MIB 2, and the Richmond (Milton Keynes) alloys on it were different to the Mk 7 Richmonds.

Early cars (built before bw22 2015) will have less standard kit.
They miss out on sat nav, winter pack (heated seats). At one point keyless entry was standard, but really early cars don't have it as standard and some later cars don't have it either.
The links SRGTD has provided above should provide any additional information you may need.

They were a bit of both, the exhaust is PP 7 to 7.5 the body is just pre and post facelift any GTi. TBH someone will know what version the facelift engine has and whether its much different from the early mk7 EA888, or if the Turbo is different.
I think its easy for me to say, but all things being equal I would always buy newer, unless you are planning on modding and want the spare cash? Also I would go for a Performance one so you get the VAQ diff, I wouldn't buy a 220+ bhp FWD car without some sort of Diff support, whether that's a Quaiffe or VAQ diff. Its in no way essential to the car though, just what I prefer. Non PP car won't have the bigger brakes either.
One thing I'm still trying to find out is if the stability off button is actually off on later cars (I know it wasn't fully off on pre facelift 2014 car), or whether its revised to allow a little more yaw? Just curious if they did anything in that area.

I’ve still got the .pdf brochure and price list / tech spec when I ordered my 7.5PP back in June 2018, by the time it arrived in late December 2018 it’s classed as a MY19 - differences between the Std and PP are:
245 BHP for the PP - 15 more than the std
7 speed on the PP vs 6 DSG on the std
Larger Disk Brakes on PP
Limited Slip Diff on PP
Unique ‘GTI’ badging front and rear (VW words, not mine😄) on the PP.
Due to the WLTP delays the MY specs got a bit hazy in the tail end of 2018, so mine had the camera but lacks the keyless system ( didn’t lose any sleep over that as I paid a price discounted from 2018 list anyway)
Happy Hunting👍
Edit - mine has a DSC off button

many thanks for all the replies.
that gives me a good chunk of info to go through.
A diff would be quite high on my list of wants, so will look for a performance pack.
Was the LSD on all performance packs? Or just the PP after the facelift?

All Performance pack cars have the VAQ diff, (the later 7.5 were just called performance for some reason).
