Title: Secondhand VR5 engine reliability for swap to a VW Up Track Car.
Post by: Ej1749 on 10 January 2023, 17:16
Hi, does anyone know what the VR5 engines are like for reliability and also when tuned? I am looking at a second hand engine and will have it fully rebuilt to put it a VW Up. I have a guy who can sell me a Cat D - standard VW Up for about 2K. Engine is about 1K. All the engine mounts etc are custom made to fit the Up etc. There are some videos online of a few 5 pot Up's and Skoda thingys.

If anyone has any experiences with these engines I'd be grateful for any advice on them stock and boosted?

Mate bought a mk4 v5 for £1,950 a while ago great going wee car, car in general has given him no issues apart from a creaky interior and it's now tornado pink with lacquer peel. It's an engine that gives a great 'first car' nostalgia.

Sounds epic as well, imo a great engine for an Up even at the standard 170bhp.

Going back 15yrs  but the 10v was known to backfiring through the manifold and destroy themselfs. The 20v was a better engine.
