Title: New lady owner needs help please
Post by: JENS4 on 02 December 2022, 10:32
Hi there guys, i bought my golf gti 7.5 dsg 2017  last month, and not using the car to the potential until i build up some confidence in the car, it has started doing what's in the video, 1.27 mins in to video( SORRY I CANT SHORTEN IT),NOR LOAD IT APPARANTELY.
Its normally in drive when this happens, has any one got any ideas on what's wrong, it apparently does it in eco mode very occasionally.
So what it is doing in my words, when driving along approx 30/40mph in drive, the rev counter shoots up as if its trying to shift the gear change, it also makes the noise off over revving, only lasts a second. i have it on video and a few techs have mentioned launch control......???? it has been scanned for faults, none present, and been mapped also but not sure to what extend as guy wont provide the info....

i love the car so much and just would like some general ideas if anyone recognises this, or tips to load the actual video.

Where did you buy the car from as in main dealer, second hand dealer or private? Did you know the car was modified prior to purchase? It wouldn't be launch control if you're moving and seems silly they'd even say that.

If you knew what remap was added you could go back and get it completely removed, or alternatively it's just a crap remap as the owner couldn't afford a good one and maybe a good reputable remap could fix this issue? eg Revo, APR or Celtic Tuning.

Doesn't that sound like a slipping clutch?

When was the last DSG fluid change? You are not resting your hand near the lever are you?

Oh and not sure where the "Techs" are on about as when you are moving Launch control can not be accessed.

Upload video to YouTube and post a link on here.

Hello

I'm assuming the car is DSG from what you've said. Can you consistently reproduce the issue? Are you in Drive mode (shows as 'D') in the instrument cluster when this happens. Does it do it in the same gear for Eco mode?

If you're not familiar with the car, is it possible that you've knocked it into manual mode or hit the paddles to do this if you use the DSG to manually shift gears? This will show as 'M' in the instrumentation. Not trying to be patronising, I just know from experience with friends who have moved to DSG from other marques that they've had a period of adjustment. If the car was knocked into manual by the paddles, it'll go back to drive mode or whatever mode you were in if you don't continue to use the paddles.

It could be a bad mapping, physical damage to the gearbox/clutch slipping. Is there a service history to confirm that the DSG gearbox has been properly maintained - you should have had a DSG oil change at 40,000 miles off the top of my head.

If the car has been modified by someone having a go versus knowing what they're doing, there is a good chance that the gearbox has been damaged as a result. Companies offering maps will warranty their work and will be able to revert it to stock and confirm what to expect in terms of engine characteristics.

It won't be launch control from your description of the issue, any tech who tells you that is not qualified and guessing.

My advice would be to take it to a credible VAG specialist - someone like APS in Brackley (https://www.apsspecialistvehicles.co.uk/servicing/) and have them undertake an inspection. It's harder to chase an issue when you don't have history or know the parameters of the mapping.

If you can't upload a video, try using a service like IMGUR (https://imgur.com/) and paste the embedded link in a thread here.

Bit of an odd one this.

AGB makes really good points and more relevantly sound advice especially as far as using competent specialists experienced in modified cars.

Basically if the revs are increasing but speed isn’t then that points to the removal of friction and any transmission resistance at the flywheel so the engine speed will increase even if the throttle pedal pressure is constant. Either clutch slip or the drive clutch of the given gear disconnects to cause a fault like this.

The TCU (DSG brain) may have been modified as well as the engine ECU, so without proper history you really need specialists to investigate.

Badly remapped turbo engines will often have a spike in torque caused by too much boost on initial turbo spool (so between 1300 to 2000 rpm until around 2500 or 3000 rpm as a rough guide) which will eventually lead to clutch slip at low to medium revs.

Thanks guys, so no i have not accidently hit the gearshift or paddles. car is in drive only, yes it has only recorded same fault once in eco mode and that was after a long drive approx 160miles. The mapping was carried out by a professional map company up north called eco-tune, not that i can tell you what stage it was as i have no paperwork and gdpr wont allow them to tell me.Car has been scanned via odis and no fault codes present.Apart from that it is superb to drive , still trying to load video for you..Dsg changed last year, car on 56k

GDPR is a component of human rights law. If you provide the VIN, there is no exposure of personal data in relation to the former owner.

DSG changed? Oil or gearbox unit?

Morning, it was the dsg oil change, funny thing is i have all the previous service history and all previous owner details, but as much as i insisted all i wanted to know was what had the car been mapped up to, eco-tune would not under any circumstances divulge the info, infact they even said the car hadn't been to them and that was before i gave the registration.I spoke to the area gdpr manager who i know well and he said as much as i wasn't asking about the prior owner just the info on the car, they were in there rights to do so. So guess i need to get to a local tuning place to see what the story is and get the car plugged in to see if that gives any tips on whats going on.All i know about the prior owner was he was very much into showing cars off and excellent performance so i wouldnt imagine it has a crap map whilst he had it, but may take it off to see how the car runs without it....????????????

I'll say it again.... it sounds like clutch slip.

Which will more than likely be caused by the map.

Two possible fixes - take the map off or get an uprated clutch.

I'd go with plan A, but if you fancy spending a lot of money, plan B will fix it too.

The DSG clutches will easily handle a map only the manual boxes need a clutch upgrade.

Find a decent VW specialist to look at it as dealers are just plug in and read codes, if there are no codes there is nothing wrong. They are mostly fitters not mechanics.

100% this.

If you want greater performance from the car, there are proven Stage 1 maps that won't require hardware upgrades. Only issue is that if the map has the performance characteristics that make you love the car.

There are few things I am certain of in life and when it comes to selling cars, I can say with absolutely certainty that people always lie. Project cars always strike fear unless supported by the work having been undertaken by a reputable specialist where you have an audit trail.

I wouldn't waste my time with Ecotune or whatever was left on it. I'd get the car baselined to stock and if you're not happy with performance, use a reputable VAG specialist to build the performance profile that you want. To proceed any other way is like building on sand because the map is fundamental and if you have problems, you'll be forever chasing your tail trying to isolate them and never have absolute certainty as to other changes you make.

Wise words above. DSG clutches are more robust than manual - if treated correctly.
If a well known local ‘performance specialist’ has been dabbling getting it back to a baseline is the only way for peace of mind.

I love the car to bits, and love the heavy right foot at the right times, but mostly im just like miss daisy going to and from work.
I'm in the trade also so my car has been a interesting topic of intrigue and everyone wanting to drive it. Spoke to local tuning guy who advised me to pop by and have a chat, then he can tell me whats on the car map wise and i can show him the video and take it from there i guess and see what my options are.Im not looking to rag the car but i want to enjoy it and knowing the power is there if i feel like showing off when a young un pulls up in his fiesta egging me on..Thanks for the advise so far, really aprreciate it.
