I guess we can draw some hope from that.

‘The new 3.0 software is coming now,’ he said. ‘It will not be the sliders and hardware, but the software will be a tremendous step up in the next few weeks.
I wonder do existing owners get this "3.0" software? I would be doubtful...
As for the non-illuminated sliders, I can't understand how something as simple as this wasn't rectified ages ago. This would definitely be a hardware change though so us existing owners will never see this.

i wonder if the changes will be to schedule, given past promises.

Guessing this is the change? two knobs

Thats not a change, it’s the basic unit only fitted to the base ‘Golf’ model although very rare since the basic models were discontinued during the supply chain issues. You also don’t get the touch sliders with it.
Don’t know why it’s in a GTI though. Unless the GTI spec on some region has it. It’s wierd as the steering wheel has he haptic buttons while lower than models have the buttons.

Recently, I have viewed a video on an American web site, which reviewed the spec of a new 2023 GTI. Maybe for their GTI SE spec. It had the two knobs fitted either side of the infotainment screen. The presenter referred to their function too. I’ll have a look for it again and if I find it I’ll post the link.

Amercian spec is different to UK/EU - they have a cheapo infotainment system you don't find here - something from a Polo or something... the knobs are for that.

The USA have three different trim levels for the GTI; S, SE and Autobahn. The GTI S gets the small infotainment unit / screen with the two knobs.

Usually American cars have Satellite radio too.

So the software changes and hardware changes mentioned that's coming in the next 18 months are these for our cars that are on the road and facing these problems or does he mean for new cars being released?

In regards to ‘cars that are on the road’, - Software (likely) Yes! Hardware No!

I don't see what the fuss is about re: volume and heater buttons not lighting up. I use the control on the steering wheel for volume and rarely change the temperature for the climate control as it is set for the same temperature year-round.
The software however.........my Sept 2021 CS is way better than my May 2021 GTI but still needs a new steering wheel for Emergency and Travel Assist "bongs"...typically only once on startup.
Fortunately for VW the car's dynamics outweigh the infotainment.....choosing NOT to buy a car based on infotainment as many have said on the web is just silly.

Agreed. As a designer, it’s unfathomable how the cabin controls weren’t user tested before sign off
