Title: Disc and pad costs
Post by: LSBristol on 19 October 2022, 08:50
I've got MOT and service coming up and I'm expecting VW to advise at least rear discs and pads if not front as well. Pricing at VW is over £1000 for both - does anybody know what the going rate is at kwik fit or similar? Do they usually use OEM parts or would they use bosch or something? Wouldn't normally go somewhere like that but for something as isolated as brakes I'd be tempted if it was significantly cheaper.

Find a decent Independent garage and  get then to use OEM parts and you will save £500 or more. Main Stealer prices are extortionate they wanted £289 just to check my alignment. I literally went next door to MrTyre who did it for me for £49 then told me they do the ones for the VW garage as well.

Find a decent independant, i would think Kwik Fit would source there parts from the local factors theyve got screwed down on price which means any makes really.

The trouble is with aftermarket pads its a one pad compound fits all kind of thing, whereas a genuine VW pad will be tailored to that individual application, differing compounds between the different models - a 1.5TSi pad will be different to a TDi, to a GTi, to an R ??

Also who'd let Kwit Fit, Formula Fcukup, etc loose on there pride and joy??

Message received! Will start the search for a local indie.

I wouldn't trust Kwik Fit to fix a wheelbarrow.

Agreed worst place you could go

Local VAG Specialist is the place to go, not a local independent.

I usually do my own brakes.

Not too difficult and saves some money to spend on other car bits.

I was in the same situation, sourced the parts myself online and went to a local mechanic for the fitting.

I have just had front pads and discs changed 7.5 gti performance yesterday at vw dealer inc  brake fluid change at 500 inc vat got offered this at few different dealers with some negotiation some wanted over 800!!

For ref thou front oem pads are on back order atm hardley any dealers got them.

Also the discs and pads for my car are exactly the same as a skoda VRS 245 and was offered the same 500 all in price at a skoda dealer too.

Amazing how they reduce or match the price when you tell them what another dealer will do it for.

Do the same with my Servicing too.

Don't take it to Kwik fit.

Sorry for the old thread revival.

Been quoted £800 for discs and pads all round for the GTD at a local VW specialist. I have asked them to quote based on genuine VW or OEM quality parts, which they say they have.

Does this seem reasonable or should I be shopping around?

I've just spent ~£350 on some VBT grooved front discs and EBC redstuff front pads, parts only. They're not difficult to fit - so I'll be doing it myself. However, if a garage wanted to charge me over £500 for the same parts fitted, I'd be surprised. £800 for pads and discs all round seems steep to me, unless they are uprated parts, then it might be ok.

Try something like 'Bookmygarage' for a quote to see what the potential range of prices might be. You can then ask about OEM or otherwise parts to get a fair comparison.
Title: Re: Disc and pad costs
Post by: madstaff on 29 June 2023, 19:25
I would guess there's roughly £500 +VAT worth of parts required, that's genuine discs and pads from VW.

So with 3 hrs labour £800 all in isn't too bad.

Trouble is folk look on Euro Crap Parts and there cheap prices, it's not the same stuff as VAG.

Had a quote for my old gtd for front discs and pads and rear pads from VW for £800 fitted.

You can't argue with oem parts, only ones I'd try other than oem are trw who make oem ones.

Thanks for the replies all.

Tried bookmygarage and prices vary between £500-ish and £700-ish. Although I'm not expecting any of those will have quoted based on genuine parts.

I'd only just noticed that when you book via the VW website, the prices they quote vary between dealers. Previously I'd assumed they were a fixed price set by VW, but it seems not.

Anyway, VW seem to want between £900 and £1k. So maybe £800 isn't too bad for genuine parts.

The VW specialist asked for my reg so he could get the correct VW parts for my car. Last thing I want is to end up with brakes for a 1.0 litre Golf Match!

I wouldn't go down the genuine parts route personally simply because of the cost.

On our performance pack car the OE front pads are stamped TRW. TRW pads to fit in a TRW box are £40-45. TRW pads in a VW box are £130

*Edit ... Sorry they are Brembo

Pads were off Ebay, discs were from a Local VW Specialist. Only thing that will stop people is the spline bolt but the socket is cheap enough and pays for itself the first time it is used.

IVC, an indie in Leeds, did a major service on my Mk7 and did the rear disks and pads last year and it was about a grand all in.

Don't rate them personally. Wanted a crazy amount for some work on mine pre-covid and got some colleagues who have taken their car there and not super complimentary on the service received.

After my service last week my rear discs and pads need done.  I looked at Brembo's online and you can get discs and pads for the rear for £106.44 all in on Autodoc, this is the disc ttps://www.autodoc.co.uk/brembo/7014355 and pad https://www.autodoc.co.uk/brembo/7624599 seem suspiciously cheap, I use the correct part references, 5Q0-615-601-E and 5G0698451.  Am i getting cheap Brembo knock offs for that price?  On ebay pads are £39 (Brembo) and £169 for discs from here, https://www.volkswagenpartsuk.co.uk/parts/rear-brake-discs-5q0-615-601-e/ assume that is more in line with the price I should be paying, unsure if they are legit? Need to get a price from the local VW garage parts store.

I asked this question on here a while back and was told the Brembo's on AutoDoc/ECP are cheaper 'made in China' Brembo's. Make of that what you will.

Personally if I were changing mine, this would be very tempting....

My local dealer has quoted £305.28 for rear pads and discs, its £105.96 just for the pads, any recommendations for dealers doing deals for OEM parts?
Title: Re: Disc and pad costs

If you are 100% going dealer OE then I'm pretty sure that sounds like a good all in price.

I'm sure I paid close to that just for my front pads at the dealer when they needed doing.

I had mine done end of last year by local trusted garage in Hampshire, I did research and Borg and Beck seemed like good make, and the outside is coated, so they haven’t rusted like the OEM did.

Brakes feel great, glad I didn’t pay the £1000 the stealer wanted.

Prices have crept up a bit since then, but this is what I paid:

Front disc and pads

Discs £104.46
Pads £45.24
Labour £94.80
Sub Total £244.88
Vat £48.90
TOTAL £293.40

Rear discs and pads

Discs £88.30
Pads £33.48
Labour £126.40
Sub Total £248.18
Vat £49.63
TOTAL £297.81

To answer my own question at the top of page 2, paid £640 last week for both front and rear discs and pads at the local franchised VW dealer (Inchcape).

Tried booking via the website first and they wanted approx £1k. So rang them up and asked for a quote over the phone and was told £640.

I'm not saying there won't be cheaper garages out there, but this was the best I could do for genuine VW parts.

Always worth calling round different dealers and asking for diclscount once you get a price from one they will usually all match it

They will probably ask for it in writing as its in the T&C of price matching.

Yeah I had this last year when shopping around for a cam belt. The closest dealer wouldn't even match the price on the VW website!
