Hi
My GTi PP has 26000 miles on it. It’s recommended to change the oil at 40,000 miles but as it’s now 6 years old would you recommend doing this? If so what is the general cost?
Thanks

Yes I would change it. If your in the UK it should be around 200 to 250 pounds for main dealer service. Cheaper if you get genuine parts and get a trusted Indy to carry out the service.

I changed mine at 3 years and 14k. Probably a bit OTT.

VW currently charging £350 for a DSG service aswell - so way better to go to a trusted indy

If it's a 7-speed the DSG service interval is 80,000 miles. The older 6-speeds are 40k.
Edit: Just realised you said it was 6 years old, so probably a 6 speed.

Didn't think the 7 speed needed oil change?

It does if you want it to last

It does if you want it to last
On that note, I would consider getting the oil changed a lot earlier than 80k miles. I had an Audi with a multitronic (CVT) gearbox that failed. Went to a specialist who said the 40k intervals were far too long as the oil was highly degraded by then and recommended 20k intervals. I will look at getting my dsg done at around 40-50k miles if I still have the car.

As per my earlier note, I changed mine at 3 years, even though it had only done 14k - probably a bit OTT. but I’m planning on keeping it for sometime.

In response to Davo's comment, Its the DQ200 7speed fitted to lower power models that doesnt have an oil change interval, such as the 1.4tsi and 1,6tdi

It does seem counter intuitive that the boxes fitted to the high power cars i.e. GTi's & R's have a service interval of 80k whereas the lower boxes and 6 speeds were every four years and not mileage dependant.
There must be reason for the cars who you would hope are being driven a little bit more enthusiastically.

My reason for change is simple - I used to have a Discovery D4 (from new) with a ‘sealed for life’ Borg Warner auto box - after warranty I took it to a local Indy that suggested I check the Borg Warner website for Service intervals (basically a flush and fluid change) - it was 80K km.
Sealed for life / no maintenance = length of manufacturer warranty.
Price of a new DSG box vs. Fluid change cost every 3 years.

Had the DSG service on my GTD 7 this morning and cost was £219. It's every 4 years or 40k. Make an allowance to be in the garage for 3 hours as they wait 2 hours for the gearbox to cool down before working on it.
