Hi all
I currently own a 2018 FL (Non PP), Golf Gti. I am wanting to upgrade the brakes both front and back. Does anyone know of any company’s that do a complete upgrade kit “front and rear”. I have done plenty of mods to my cars in the past but am will admit i am a novice when it comes to brake setup changes.
Does the PP have vented rears or is it just the front callipers and discs that are different? Would i need to change the calliper carrier if i went from non pp to pp front callipers etc.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You will need new carriers and dust shields in addition to calipers front and rear. The dust shields on the rear callipers are behind the hubs which is a bit of a pain to change. The rears are vented. You can also add air ducts at the front if you want the full 'monti'. I expect someone on the forum can recommend a source of a kit. There is a thread on the forum somewhere from last year saying the upgrade is probably not worth the money as the calipers are still single pot and to look at other options. Personally found the pp brakes bite a bit better than non pp.

Thanks for that Joe, thats what i am talking about it the other bits. I have seen mentioned a popular change would be to go the the TT s setup on the front. Which sounds appealing but as mentioned i haven’t a clue what i would need along with part numbers. And if i do the fronts i would want to do the rears as well .
Fingers crossed someone will save the day. My local go to garage can do the rears as they did them on my previous Audi.
-
Fronts are easy just needing the caliper carrier to suit the bigger discs, and the larger dust shield to suit.
The rears however are a bit more involved as I think the calipers are different because of the extra width of the vented disc, so the caliper is bigger to accommodate the (thicker) discs and pads.

Revo are the only company that I am aware of offering a front and rear brake upgrade kit but it’s not cheap at around £3.5K and it’s designed for the PP so the rear upgrade would require additional parts. Personally I would focus on the front and recommend the Racingline stage 2 kit but it depends why you are upgrading?
The Racingline kit is so much lighter than the PP set up and it’s a four pot system. The car drives better (not just brakes better) with this kit, as there is around a 5kg weight saving per corner.
There are plenty of other options though.

Don't bother with anything for the rear as even the TCR race cars only have 272mm solid discs...which are smaller than your GTI discs..
As for the fronts the easiest set up made for the MQB platform are the Audi TT-S ATE brand 4 pot calipers..uses the same 340mm discs as the GTI-PP/CCS/R...

Sold out...
plenty of other options on that site...like the Porsche Macan kit (requires 345mm discs) etc

As above the rears are way to overpowered and do nothing as weight is thrown to the front on braking. Mine rusted to death before they wore out. PP brakes are the easiest option on the front and probably the cheapest by far and are very good unless you are tracking it every week.
-
Reading down through this quickly, my first thoughts were soon echoed in the comments above, leave the rears unless doing trackdays or high speed autobahn jaunts.
Retrofitting refurbed PP fronts with TCR discs might be an economical option but if overall weight isn’t a huge concern then maybe a mk8 Clubsport front brake assembly might be desirable. I read that they’re quite heavy but they work (at road speeds) really nicely. I’m another that has modified cars all my life but never fitted uprated brakes for some reason. However the mk8 Clubsport brakes have genuinely impressed me as someone who has always been a bit “meh” with VW brakes. Cost might be prohibitive though.
Back in the mk5 days they used to fit Porsche front callipers and there was a guy who sold the kits via forums, before (I think) he went full time and I’m sure he’s still around. Then again I’m old and my memory is sketchy.

The best thing you can do before going down this "brake upgrade" route it to ensure your brake fluid has been changed and filled with some decent spec fluid, and your running some decent, OEM at least, pads.
-
Thanks to all for the input, a lot of you mentioned to leave the rear brakes alone i am guessing thats why theres not many full kits out there. My front discs will need changing in the near future. I would love to go down the racingline route but i think that may just be too far out of my budget. I was hoping to keep the spend to a minimum.
Think what set me off was seeing a PP car driving beside and the PP callipers looked so much better with the Gti logo on them than the standard red callipers.
The car is standard at the moment as its still under warranty but would be looking to go stage 1 in the future, thats why i was also thinking of upgrading. Car won’t be tracked at all, just a spirited drive every now and again.
-
I guess if your front discs are ready for replacement now is the ideal time to upgrade to PP spec, you just need to source a pair of PP calipers and carriers.
-
So if i go to PP spec I obviously need a pair of callipers and carriers. What size discs do i need and also does anyone happen to have the part numbers for the correct dust Shields i also need as i am guessing these will these also need upgrading.
Are the Golf R front callipers the same as the PP front callipers?
Regards

Both a PP equipped Golf and a Golf R share the same 340mm front discs so the calipers and carriers will be the same.
PP ones however come in red, which everyone knows adds 5mph.
-
The discs are 340mm, I have Textar 92229805 discs and Textar 2473803 pads.
Considering that Golf R's and to a lesser degree GTi PP's often get written off due to bad driving you would think that a used brake set would be relatively easy to find.
The Seat leon Cupra is likely to have the same front brakes also.
-
So if a am looking to get a secondhand set of PP calliper’s what would be a good price? I have seen a few sets listed for £350+ but i am not sure if thats a good price or not. People tend to include a used set of disc’s and pads which I wouldn’t want.
Am the callipers aren’t in what i would call ready to bolt on condition, i would like to get them refurbished before i fit them.
Any help or pointers appreciated and tjanks for everyone who has already took the time to reply.

They are expensive looking on eBay and £350 isn't too bad as there are plenty of pairs for considerably more than that.
Bare in mind new VW discs and pads are a small fortune to buy too, so if there included and are in good nick I'd view that as a bonus.
Easy enough to refurb if you know what your doing as the calipers are nothing special, probably 54mm pistons like every other hot Golf model since the mk3.
Maybe worth making an offer considering everything's there to bolt on including dust shields??

I have been in contact with a guy about a set of callipers from 2015 S3 inc 340mm discs with minimal wear. It has the black plate with S3 on. So i would obviously have to paint this and get the GTi stickers. I have got him down to £250 if i collect them this week end.
I am assuming these will fit? Does anyone have the part numbers for the bigger brake dust shields?
I am guessing this is a good deal

What type of brake fluid would you recommend over the oem stuff. Thanks
-
I fitted MTEC Drilled /Grooved discs all-round on my R wagon, these seemed a good a visual improvement over OEM discs & not silly money
I also added a set of RS3 air guide ducts to the front wishbones, these are £28pr from TPS
You can get Porsche Macan 4pot caliper bolt on upgrade kits from places like CLP https://clptuning.co.uk/product/macan-calliper-kit-vag-mqb/ selecting the discs/pads as you wish

Hi all,
Just want to say a thank you to everyone who posted and assisted, got my PP brakes installed today. Cost me about £400 in total including the install and a brake fluid replacement with ATE race fluid. (Changes included new Oem brake shields new calliper bolts, new sets of oem pads, Oem discs were included in the calliper purchase price of £250, new decals for the cover plate.

Happy with that for now. Will probably move to a clubsport disc and Ebc red pads after the winter. Just to spread the cost out a little. Quick after and before but i am sure you all know what they look like.
