Title: creaking suspension
Post by: symonh2000 on 12 September 2022, 08:13
Does anyone else here suffer creaks from their suspension?

I seem to be getting noises from both the front and rear on undulating roads, and over speed humps.

It sounds like a bed getting a good hammering.

I have a tin of silicone spray, is it worth going around the bushes and links and giving them a good spraying?

There is also a noise which seems to be coming from the hatch, and it is worse in colder weather.

Thank you in advance. :)

Do you have DCC by any chance??

My front suspension creaks going over bumps and when reversing on my drive whilst turning.

Ive think its the front top mounts, or maybe the front wishbone rear bushes.

Ive tried the silicone spray treatment and didnt notice any change.

There is a TPI out regarding wishbone bushes which basically says to fill the bush voids with some expensive lithium grease.

The workshop manual regarding the lubricating of the control arm rear bushes.

I had this done under warranty for front wishbone buses the grease cures it for a short while took it back in and they changed the front radius arms .
The latest version of the arms has been changed to cure the issue.
Mine has been fin since ( 2018 gti PP DCC)

No it doesn't have DCC

Thanks for the tip on the front bushes.

I am falling out of love with this car at the moment, it seems to be suffering from quite a few annoying niggles.

Such a shame as it is a great car otherwise.

This is interesting to me as i have had these issues for a while now, having spent plenty on new shocks, top mounts and drop links plus the harmonic  damper , my garage has just found this also

Greased up the bushes , done 1500 miles and it's back to how it was !
So have new control arms coming with super pro bushes , Lets see how that goes !!

Mine has creaks from both the front and rear, but the rear is by far the worst. It almost sounds like it could be the tailgate.

Not what you would expect on a lowish mileage car.

Finally bit the bullet and got mine booked in at the end of October (first time with a car free).

Mine has a creak when parking and I'm on full-lock left (loud) or right (slightly), definitely sounds like its coming from the front high up as if its 'adjusting or settling' also get it on full lock left when coming down a multi-story carpark.

I've already had the main subframe bolts removed and greased as per a TPI which did help with the creaking I had when braking before turning in.

I've mentioned this issue before but with other problems and I think the dealer has said they couldn't hear it so this time I've just booked it in for this issue alone.

I took out a two year extended warranty when I bought the car so I'm hoping this will be covered by this.

I didn't realise that there was a TPI on subframe bolts as well!!

Me neither, anyone able to post up any more details about this TPI??

An update on my car.

I have significantly reduced the noise on my car. I was suspicious that most of it was coming from the rear hatch, and I have managed to cure that by adding white spray grease to the boot catch.

Now onto the suspension creaks...

Update to my dealer visit on Wednesday to try and fix my front suspension creaks under my extended warranty.

As I mentioned before I booked this appointment a long time ago as I needed a car which always delays things, this time I went out with the tech so he could hear the noises as they happened, sounds great but unfortunately as the weather has been a bit damp the creaks weren’t as loud as they are when it’s been dry/hot.

My dealership was packed as they had just had a delivery of new and demo cars (loads of eUp!’s at 26K each) but I managed to recreate the creaks in the carpark when the suspension was underload mainly on full left lock.

He thought it would just need some ‘greasing’ of the bushes but they would check it out when up on the ramp.

Anyhow, I left my car with them all day and I actually rang them just before closing to find out what was what…. seems it had been ‘fixed’ and I could come and pick it up.

I hate doing the handover right at the end of the day when they are clearly packing up to go home, got my keys back but no paper work or any mention of what had actually been done.

Drove home.

Next day went to park at work…. Full lock and … creak creak!

No change… I’m at a loss now… if I had been paying for this then I would be straight back round to the dealer but maybe if I was paying they would have started to change out components... who knows.

If I book it in again I’ll probably be waiting until after Christmas to have a car available… my year four service is in March maybe I’ll wait until then?

Question is am I expecting too much? Under warranty on a 3 ½ year old car should I have creaks from the suspension?  (My wife’s 2013 Polo doesn’t make any noise still).

To me it points to the top-mounts but unless the dealer suggests that they replace them I’m not sure how I could force the issue.

I didn't get the impression that they were aware of the TPI mentioned above regarding the top-mounts.

Unfortunately this small thing spoils such a perfect car.
