Title: New member searching- clubsport edition40
Post by: tricky401 on 07 September 2022, 17:11
Good evening all, first post here so please be nice. I’m looking at a golf gti as my next car, originally looking for a PP mk7.5

The more I look at clubsport 40s the more I like them so I would now prefer one of those. I have been looking for a few months and starting to wonder if my ideal spec is like finding a needle in a hay stack

Does anybody have access to how many are made with certain options etc, have seen a few different forums with this for other cars. Or is anybody looking to sell soon and want to give me a heads up.

Ideal spec-

Manual
5 door
Pan roof

Would like but not a deal breaker

DCC
Dynaudio

Also less than 50k mileage and full service history, standard preferred but will consider some mods

There's a black one in the classifieds - https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=288777.0

Probably gone now but worth asking.

According to how many left, there were 230 manual Edition 40s taxed and sorn in the first quarter of this year. I doubt there's a way of narrowing it by options but I'd have thought a sunroof was a reasonably rare option given the more performance orientation of the CS40. If you want to get a car without waiting an age for the perfect spec, you'll need to be really flexible on spec and concentrate on condition. Good luck

Many thanks for the reply. Yep I fear you may be correct and I will have to compromise somewhere. There’s a lovely one for sale in Hinckley in white with everything I want but only 3 door, it’s also been for sale for at least 3 months

Might have to see if it’s big enough for my needs as ideally I want a 5 door

Have you tried VW's own used car website? May well be cars on there not on Autotrader.

A three door will be the same size as a five door, but you lose out on practically as it might be more difficult to gain access to the rear seats in a three door (e.g. elderly passengers and getting children in and out of car seats). Also, the longer doors make it more of a squeeze getting in and out of the car in tight parking spaces.

There’ll be those who prefer the looks of a three door over a five door though.

I know the OP doesnt want Recaros but, I have to admit, my 3 dr with Recaros is a nightmare gaining access to the rear seats.

I would like recaros but it limits the search even more

The one 5 door I have seen with them also looks like the back seats have a lot less room

May just have to wait it out or get a PP gti

What about a TCR? Love mine 😁

Hi tricky401

If you're on facebook it's worth joining the VW Golf GTI Edition 40 Owners page as there are often private sales on there. If you post what you're looking for you might get some direct approaches too.

When you're looking, there are a number of imports from Ireland which are really well-specced and therefore more likely to have DCC, Dynaudio and pan roof (and also Recaros which I know you're not too bothered about). Some are registered as imports, but some aren't depending on first registration, but you can tell it's an import if there isn't a numbered plaque on the inside of the driver's door. It depends if that would bother you.

Great cars, love mine too but the OP wants a manual which I can understand. Perhaps a late 5 door manual R might be worth thinking about? I would probably prefer that to a GTIP for the better engine if I had to.

Brave man with a cast iron warranty needed if purchasing a manual Golf R, as i believe the clutches are very prone to slipping/failure if driven hard??

The Golf R manual ‘box also has a very low second gear which can be a bit frustrating.
Not as frustrating as DSG often is when attempting gentle acceleration and ending up with the TCU having a committee meeting about whether to change down, just slip the clutch or knock it down too many gears for no reason.

It’s well worth holding out for a decent Ed40. And I mean a decent one, many won’t be by now.

Thread bump on this

I have found a lovely clubsport with all the options I’m after, including recaros which is a nice bonus

I am however in need of a car that occasionally will need a rear facing baby seat in the back.

Firstly, how easy this is in 5 door golf( my wife’s troc actually gives very little room for the front passenger)
Secondly, is this better or worse with the recaros, they look a look bigger from pictures but first would experience would be great

Hopefully this gets a reply rather than making a new thread on it or if somebody could link to a discussion before, thanks

Also does anybody have a service schedule for these or any idea what’s done when? Any tips what to look for specific to the clubsport or gti when viewing the car

Thanks

Do you do many miles??

As a Golf R and Clubsport both have the bigger IS38 turbo which in turn leads to increased mpg.
I see around 29mpg commuting and saw 38mpg on a run up the M1 on boxing day.

By all accounts a Golf GTI returns better mpg.

No I only do about 4/5000 per year so pretty low. Thanks for the reply

When does the aux belt need changing? Don’t think it’s been done on this, well
No receipt. Also the brake fluid is every 3 years, is that correct?

That is the one. Viewed today. Unfortunately it looks better in the photos than in real life. Has had a questionable body repair, overspray etc, rusty chips on the bonnet and all 4 wheels have white worm

Shame as it’s the perfect spec

If anybody knows of any others for sale or a member is thinking of selling up please let me know

Just to add this is only my opinion and also my biggest drawback with used cars

I always expect to find them as I would be selling them, in the best condition they could be so I end up walking away from a fair few

If I could meet my long lost twin selling an Edition 40 I’d be a happy bunny

Hi, l have a 3 door, pure white, with the recaro's that might be for sale in a month or so, l know it's not the spec you have been looking for, but just thought l'd throw it in the mix......?

That's a shame! I think you will find white worm with the alloys on the Clubsport Ed40s if they haven't been refurbished... even with no curbing the belvederes and brescias (and other diamond cut wheels) seem to suffer and they will be about 6 years old now. The questionable body repair would worry me too though!

That’s not good, did you travel far? Were you interested in making a cheaper offer?

Yep agreed on diamond cutting wheels especially vw wheels seem to suffer badly from this. The gloss black parts were also badly scratched so would need a full refurb

Not too far really, lost about 2 hours for the trip in total including the viewing as I wasn’t there long. I did think that but I’d have no idea how much the body work would cost to sort and the timescale of sorting such thing. The wheels would be easier but again it’s a tough one

APS have a decent CS40. Think I remember you saying you wanted 5 door. Not sure how much of a deal breaker 3/5 is. It's a great spec.

A nice price on the APS car? :)

The same mileage as mine, only I have DCC, which can't hurt?

If the prices continue to go up on these, I may have to buy something else & put the CS away......

The thing is, it was bought as the runaround to keep mileage and use off of other cars.... You just can't win sometimes? :)

I don't think it's a bad price on the APS car TBH. Put it this way, if you bought the seats from VW parts, that's £14k alone. That figure was last checked a couple years ago now so probably more now the way things are going. So you're paying £16k for a car with 13k miles on it that's limited production.

I'm here with my man maths calculator to reframe your problems all week.

The car at APS does look like a great example!
