I have started this topic as some aspects of wheel spec haven’t come up in a while. I’m considering a set of winter wheels. My car has 19” Adelaides fitted and I had thought of buying an OEM set of Mk 8 Richmonds. Now I am thinking of gunmetal / anthracite in 18 x 7.5 as I already have a new set of Michelin climate+ tyres, 225 x 40 x 18. I believe Mk 8 Richmonds are ET51 and wonder should I stick with this or would a different ET look better? Contenders are Wolfrace Astoria, and Eurosport X12. I like Borbet Y, but these only come in 18 x 8 and I wonder how these would go with 225 tyres. I also wondered what type certification is required/ preferred by insurance companies, i.e. TUV? Thoughts please.
-
8” and 225 tyres will be just fine.
I’d recommend a set of grey 8x18” Reifnitz…
Maybe check out the MAK Wolf as they make them in full OEM fit including bolts and VW centre caps, either in 7.5 width or better still in Scirocco fitment at 8” wide and ET44 which will fill the arches better.
As for insurance, I’ve not had any issues with just declaring “aftermarket” wheels. Different insurers will ask for varying details so it’ll be policy dependant.

Thanks Exonian. If I was visiting CM again it would likely be gunmetal Estoril 18s. After I get my paintwork sorted it will be wheel time. 🤞

CMWheels’ 18” gunmetal Estoril replicas have a diamond cut face (described on their website as ‘machined’). I personally wouldn’t buy a set of diamond cut alloys for winter use; diamond cut alloys and winter road conditions aren’t a great combination, unless you’re a fan of the white worm corrosion look.
I’d be looking for a set of alloys with a painted / powder coated finish - much more durable than diamond cut, and much better suited to winter road conditions.

Completely agree with this - I'd never buy diamond polished wheels and would think twice about buying any car that had them (as I'd have to fork out for replacements within two years!). They're only good for new car photos and showrooms!

Agree - they may have a certain bling appeal in the dealer’s showroom for some, but not for me. I really wish car manufacturers would get over their obsession with diamond cut alloys; IMHO alloys don’t need to be diamond cut to look good.
That’s just my opinion and there’ll be others who do like diamond cut alloys, and it’s good we don’t all like the same things .

Hi SRGTD. I agree painted is better suited. The Wolfrace Eurosport X12 or Borbet Y probably fit the bill.

I think either of those would work well as winter wheels on the mk8. If I had to choose between the two, I would probably go for the Borbet Y, but that’s just my personal preference.

Has anyone fitted titanium or silver coloured wheels, other than Mk 8 Richmonds, to a Moonstone colour car? If so I’d really like to see a picture. Thanks.

Some of the alloy wheel manufacture and retailer websites have a configurator, so you can see a representation of specific car and wheel combinations. Here’s a mk8 GTI in grey with titanium coloured 18” Borbet Y alloys;
Link to configurator on the Borbet website below so you can try different types and colours of Borbet alloys;

Thanks SRGTD - good spot. I don’t know which is the closest colour to Moonstone, matt grey or grey metallic?

Thanks for that Guzzle. I think the silver brightens things up.

I have now decided on Borbet Y but not the colour. The dealers I have been to did not have any in stock. I am still looking for a gunmetal / titanium coloured rim on a Moonstone car. Can anyone help with a photo? Thanks.
-
I have placed the order for Borbet Y, 8 x 18, et44, CB57.1, 5 x112 in matt titanium, 10.6kg. As per SRGTD’s suggestion here is how they look on the Borbet configurator in the closest colour to Moonstone, I can see. I did consider silver but in the end chose titanium. I also have black mirror caps and Osram tinted DMI indicators ready to complete the look🤞

They look good and IMHO have an OEM style about them. Borbet Y alloys seem to be a popular choice on late model Golfs and Polos.
Be sure to post up some pictures when you’ve got them on your car.
-
Borbet do make some of the OEM alloys fitted by VW which is why they may have that look. You can currently specify Borbet Y wheels on the new Taigo.

Tyres (225 x 18x 40 Michelin Cross Climate+) mounted on Borbet Y titanium, (18x8, 44 ET), rims. Now for ceramic coating with Gtechniq C5 wheel armour before fitting to the car, mid November. Sorry for the thumb over the lens so I added the second photo.

I spent a few hours on my wheels, washing, cleaning them down and wiping with panel wipe before applying Gtechniq C5 wheel armour to the barrels and faces. Here’s the result although I am not sure there is any noticeable difference. I’ll apply tyre dressing before they go on.

Visually they may not look much different as they’re a matt finish, but they’re well protected now against the elements

Looking forward to seeing how they look on the car.
-
Wheels coated and fitted on the passenger side to see what they’re like. Some paintwork scheduled for this week and then I’ll fit all four.

Sort of semi-congratulations on getting the wheels (half) on the car Ceefeesh!
They look very nice indeed and I’m glad they’re not going to be coffee tables like that last set 😁

Well, finally on. Today, I washed the calipers, used brake cleaner rinsed and dried before cleaning with panel wipe, it took the part numbers off the label on the caliper! Last, applied Gtechniq C5 and put the wheels back on. Insurance company specified them on the policy, no charge. Done, until I coat them with C2 V3 next time I wash the car.

Nice
Not just the wheels either as it’s not easy to get the rear callipers looking that good at this time of year.
-
@Ceefeesh - wheels look great and callipers look good too. That’s twice I’ve had wheel envy this week - the other time was a set of bronze alloys similar in design to your Borbet alloys on a new Kings Red Polo GTI over on the Polo forum; bronze alloys on a red car worked surprisingly well.
Cleaning the red callipers, the barrels of the wheels and the reverse side of the wheel spokes forms part of my regular car washing routine - they get cleaned each time I wash my car. A set of Wheel Woolies (including an angled one) and some decent detailing brushes makes it fairly easy to do, but it does add probably a good 1/2 hour or more to the overall cleaning time.
When I see clean car but the brake callipers and wheel barrels are dirty it plays havoc with my car OCD!

Taking the hints thrown by my OCD friends, I have now ceramic coated my exhaust tips too. The OCD police will be content.

It's not ocd until you polish the exhaust back box
