TCR is now a couple of weeks for being 3 years old.
On the whole I really like it. First auto and think the DSG is way better than the asin box in the BMW M135. That being said I have had my fair share of issues such as cracked sunroof surround, leaking speaking causing soaked rear mats, door handles not returning to closed positions and rattles.
I dont have the most faith having the car out of warranty and with the trade in still really strong (circa 6k from what I paid new) I am considering options.
At this point the new type r is looking interesting ( had an EP3 version years back). Also would expect when it’s announced lead time on orders wouldn’t be so long so could at least cash in on a good price for mine maybe.
Any thoughts?

Definitely would keep the TCR for another year or two and take out VW's all-in warranty. Around £30 per month will get you two services, two MOTs, full warranty cover and two years' roadside assistance.
Too good not to take out. I had a rear main seal replaced under this warranty and just had major service and MOT without paying anything! Nice feeling.
My thinking is there is not really anything too desirable out there and prices are crazy high. Wouldn't even consider buying now.

Yeah do it!
Or no, don’t do it!
Well you only live once and the Honda should be pretty special.
But how long ‘til the novelty wears off? Or maybe it won’t wear off…
As Meister says, there really isn’t much else out there and whatever is out there costs too much money now.

Only you can make the choice. I can understand why the new type R would appeal. I was tempted. Only it's size is what's putting me off as I personally prefer smaller cars.

How about a BMW M140i?
The proper RWD one with a proper BMW 6 cylinder engine, either manual or auto are great and likely to hold or go up in value due to so many people preferring them to the later M135i...
That is where I am likely to go next if I can afford one.
-
Presumably those issues you mention are sorted now? I have found many of the odd niggly rattles have gone since I had the rear subframe harmonic balancer fitted. Well worth considering.
So if those issues are all sorted and given general reliability is very good, are you trying to justify a change? If you are bored and want something new, and why not, then go for it. Or perhaps you are just having that itch and maybe you need to do something to the car to regain the interest you had? Perhaps a few little mods will reignite the fire?

That’s what I came from. Well the 135i version. Loved it. Had it for 6 years so needed a change but did consider another but would have had the same car for a decade after not much time and that was what pushed me to try the tcr (and the additional practicalities)

It’s a shame OP has had a number of issues with his car. It’s a well made, reliable car in my experience.
I think most people change cars for the change itself - the desire to try something else. Once your brain starts telling you “ shall I swap? “, it’s only a matter of time before you give in- whatever the arguments for and against.
I’d look at the type R if I was looking to change, though agree with Snoopy- i wish it was more compact.
But if it was me, I’d keep the golf.

Yeah all issues are now fixed. Well, the rattle I noticed this week was fixed by insulation tape wrapped around the metal fixing in the rear seat so make of that what you will.
If I keep it I will take out the monthly all inclusive for sure.
I think at the moment the hypothetical cost to change to a type r wouldn’t be so much. But at some point the market will equalise and think my 30k+ offer today may look closer to 12 in a couple of years if it does… The. Again everything remains crazy at the moment, and the tcr is no bad place to be!

I have the same rattle from the back seat on mine too, It stopped for a while when I sprayed the catch with white grease but it comes back. I will try the insulation tape trick. ;)

Me too, I wrapped some anti-rattle tape around it, been fine since. The only rattle I have at the moment is from the parcel shelf. It rattles on the stops over harsh bumps. Put anti-rattle tape there too and it stops for a while then back it comes again...

We previously discussed the new Type R on here, a friend has one on order from the first announcement, it is due at some point in Q1 2023, UK supply is apparently very limited, so he has been told.
One thing I am curious of is the gearbox, do you think you will stick with a manual Civic after the Dsg in the Golf?
As cars seem to be holding their price fairly well and a new Civic Tyoe R is likely to be in demand if you can get one, when I am considering a change, in the past I have run the new car alongside the existing car for a few months. Only on one occasion have I kept the old car and only once have I regretted keeping the new one, even though financially it flipped well!

Funny I have the same rattle, I had tesa tape wrapped around mine. Must be the seat locks need replaced, mine periodically returns I used to think it was the sunroof.

Wish I had known about this sooner as spent ages trying to track it down.
Took it to the dealer who fixed it. Only noticed last week when going on holiday and had to put the seats down what they had done to fix it! Was hoping for something more substantial to be honest but driving without a rattle is a godsend!

This is my first auto and have enjoyed it a lot especially in heavy stop start traffic. Have had the type r manual box before and it’s really good so think I would be fine moving back.
At the moment there are occasions where I miss the manual. Expect it would just be a reversal of things if I did move.

Had a similar debate but there isn't really anything else out there. I think you're unlucky to have suffered the problems you've had. I haven't had any issues with our TCR but the CSS has suffered a bonnet release failure after what I'd estimate to be less than 100 uses and all the internals for the fuel filler cap were replaced.
The only car that might be worth considering is an A35 but I'd want to change the seats to the AMG Performance buckets and then it doesn't quite make economic sense. I couldn't abide the looks of the A45s with the wobbly stick on aero parts.
Personally, I'd keep the car.
