I have a Mk7 GTI with high mileage- around 155K miles. Recently it’s been using a load of oil - around 1 Litre per 600 miles. No obvious leaks )had a new steel sump fitted recently- runs great - no smell of oil etc . How can I tell if it’s faulty piston rings , valve seals or the PCV valve ? It always used a small amount but over the last few weeks it’s gone higher- any help appreciated…

Hi there, that's high mileage alright but that oil consumption is still excessive. Have you checked the exhaust smoke under load and at start-up, is there a blue tinge to the smoke if there is smoke? what do the exhaust tips look like? are they oily? Has your MPG suffered?
How is the coolant level? You should scan the car for fault codes and pull the spark plugs also to check for oil.
Or else drop the car to the dealer or a good independent and get them to check the car over.

600 miles doesn't sound right.
My GTD consumes more oil than any other car I've owned. I need a top up bottle every 3-5000 miles. The day after I bought the car (at 44000 miles) I drove it to Spain non stop approx 1500 miles. I needed to top up around 1200 miles into the trip, I sh!t myself when the oil light came on 1200 miles from home thinking it was an engine failure . It had a full service and oil change when I bought it the day before. I saw them doing it as the dealership is owned by a family friend and I requested Castrol oil in the deal, so they bought the 5 litre bottle from Halfords
Apparently, they get worse with age

Diesels always seem to burn more oil IMO (done about 400k in 5 diesels).

My gti is a 2013 with well over 100k miles and I have never topped up the oil In between services. I have owned the car from new though and I strongly think that’s the difference. It’s how the car was treated.

I think the same. Over the last 25 years only had one second hand car and that used oil but all the remainder from new and never had problems. My mk6 has nearly 100k and still does not use oil. Always taking a small chance of rougher treatment with a second hand performance model.
