Title: Noisy rear suspension ???
Post by: Dazie00 on 11 July 2022, 07:16
I've had a few noise issues with what i think is coming from rear end, a bit like scuttle shake, not always on hard hits or terrible roads, had it all checked over and had front shocks changed and also calliper sliders, rear shocks seem fine and are not leaking or sagging at all, everything is fine and tight underneath , I have read about a harmonic rear damper
Does it make much difference?
Is this a common issue with Mk7 gti s ?
Any other ideas ???
Thanks
Daz

I have a noise on mine at the rear too, mostly at slower speeds. It sounds like it could be the rear anti roll bar bushes creaking.

I am interested to see how you get on, I was planning on spraying silicone spray up under mine to see if I can fix it.

I had a damper fitted last week. It has definitely made the rear end quieter. Now most road noise comes from the front. Can't say it is the solution to your problem but it's well worth trying, especially if you can fit it yourself. There's lots of information about them here - https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=285982.0

I was thinking, this damper is just a lump of metal with a couple of bushes pressed in.

I wonder how easy it would be to make one from a piece of stainless instead of forking out the £70 odd for one.

I think its more than just a big lump of metal!!

It'll have been specifically "tuned" and be of a certain weight to cancel out a vibration occuring at a particular speed/rpm.

Are you Scottish?

No but £70 is £70.

For something that might or might not fix a problem that may or may not exist.

Any additional mass with change the resonant frequency of the subframe, so my guess is that a similar mass of bolted up would be worth a try and would be a lot cheaper.

It is but it is also fully bushed so it can move at it's own frequency to remove harmonics. Also would need to be a specific weight as well to match the sub frame harmonics. Not worth the hassle and it is a doddle to fit and on mine made a huge difference.

Well the harmonic damper didn't fix my problem and having now changed virtually all suspension parts , we have hopefully narrowed it down to the front control arms

Had this done last week and it fixed it for a while so new ones coming with polybushes  to  touch wood prevent further issues!
