Title: Fuel Crisis - 500 miles to a tank.
Post by: Ej1749 on 18 June 2022, 19:00
I’m not here to teach people to suck eggs. However, I have managed 500 miles to a tank. I have a 22 miles A1/Motorwayish/highway road for the Americans to my place of work. 1 mile out to the A1 and 1 mile to my office from the A1.

I have managed 500 miles in my MK7 GTD at the hideous price of fuel. I have been trailing lorries in adaptive cruise control. I find it be best at level 3 on the distance thingy, as there is less heavy braking and accelerating when the lorries hit inclines etc. Too close and you’re slowing and accelerating too quickly.

Everyone says that eco mode is pointless. (I agree somewhat). I find that eco mode is not really about economy, it’s is more about  adjusting your driving style to not drive as intensely. In eco mode, the throttle and everything is very slow and dulled down as you know. This is great for driving like a granny. Which when I use adaptive Cruise Control it is great. I have found to get another 75-100 miles per tank by trailing behind lorries. This is the only time in my life where lorries haven’t pissed me off.

Average behind a lorry is 62-65mpg (UK mpg).
If anyone has any further advice please let me know - I would use vegetable oil, but my car is too new haha!

That's great and I too am impressed with the economy from these cars but (within reason dependant on how high the fuel price gets) I still want to enjoy driving so I'm prepared for my travel costs to be higher. If it was just about economy I'd have bought a different car.

Used to do this in my previous TDi but drafting behind really risks the rubbish from the road peppering your bonnet and screen, also obviously using ACC behind an HGV means you are driving at around 56 mph... even when I'm getting 51 mpg using petrol I'm going at 65 mph.

Shell V-Power was £2.059 a litre yesterday in sunny South Manchester.
I’ve only ever used V-Power apart from one fill up last year during the silly shortage when I could only find E5.

I've been driving somewhat more carefully recently with the cost of fuel being so high, i can now get over 500 miles to a tank in my CS40 which i think is amazing really.

Same here👍
Car before my GTI was a Discovery 4 with a 3 litre twin turbo Diesel that had an 80 litre tank. Best mileage I could ever get was very low 30’s on a long run driving at sub 70 mph. I thank God I don’t have it now.

Yeah taking it real easy on the pedal here too and got 50mpg on super coming home from work tonight, this usually give 450ish to the tank.
2017 GTI.

I'm getting about 325 miles to 3/4 of a tank (I usually fill up at a quarter left), which leaves about 100 miles estimated range so realistically I'm getting around 350-375 miles per tank. Compared to my old 2018 GTD I'm only getting 5-30 miles less a tank, but my journeys have also gone from 500 miles a week to just 140.

This is on 19s with Michelin PS4Ss, alloys and tyres can make a difference to range and my long-term average is 32mpg, with it hitting 42mpg on 20mile journeys in summer and 46mpg on my winter set up.

Tyres is a good starting point, inflated to the correct pressure but also what tyre is it, I did a comparison a while ago & the weigh between brands differs significantly  Michelin & Goodyear tend to be the lightest, with conti being the fatty, tyres rolling resistance plays an important part in your fuel economy.

I've being driving my stg2 R wagen up & down the M1 recently & just by sticking to the limit I have managed to achieve some crazy mpg figures for a 400bhp car .

Last week Wakefield to Nottingham I managed 42.8mpg, & having done 90 miles already it was still showing 380 miles range, boring but economical ;-)

Sorry but this is news why? Looking at my fuel app I've had 500 miles on almost every single in 8 years, mostly around the 550 mark but have had 600 plus on numerous occasions just driving normally. 500 isn't even 50mpg, which is poor. Mine took a few k as the start to bed in happily and return consistent mpg.

The only time you'll ever see me anywhere near the back of a truck is on a fuel light gamble, or if I'm arriving at Heathrow way too early for family and there's no point parking up.

Is yours a dsg?

Impressive, I’m getting about 350, but I’d be bored stupid driving everywhere to get 500, might as well just get rid of the car. Once on the country roads I can’t just cruise along, I’ll just stay broke.

550-600!? I need your secrets! Mine is DSG on Michelin Super Sports. I have only ever managed 500 trailing lorries. Normal driving probably 380-430.

What tyres are you running? I couldn't get those numbers driving down a hill for 500-600 miles

I had 2 GTD's for 7 years overall. 48mpg long term average and usually about 60mpg over the summer down the motorway.

Seriously, I don't know what you are doing there....

I am starting to think I should have got the GTI now!  I only got the GTD as I assumed it was going to be a big difference in fuel consumption. When I want to have a blast the sound of a diesel is a bit sh!t ha. I miss the DSG farts from my old S3. Might even look at swapping it for a GTI now

This is exactly what I am getting with my mpg readings

So you won't want a GTI then... its more like 30mpg and 40mpg.... I did once get 50mpg by doing 65mph down the motorway for 3 hours... tbh I never felt like the GTD was slow at all. I only didn't have another because of the hate :(

Yeah I thought that would be the mileage for a GTI. My S3 saloon was horrendous on fuel. My stage 1 GTD is defo quick enough
