Title: First Service
Post by: Foxy367 on 09 June 2022, 14:44
Afternoon gang, my car is in tomorrow for it’s first service which in itself is scandalously expensive for what it is. I was asked if I wanted the engine flush which I said I would ponder. At first I thought why but then I assume it would give the chance to clean out any detritus from the engine and prolong the life anyone any thoughts?

PS it’s also having a miriad of the niggly software and sensor issues looked at and hopefully fixed

Did you not buy the service pack.... makes it a fair bit less painful!

Sadly not no schoolboy error on my part!!!

You can still buy one and it might work out cheaper than this service and the next combined…..

Thanks that’s useful, problem is im not sure if it’ll make the second service under my stewardship. It might be gone and I enter the dark side of company cars

I'm very interested in a service plan.  I've had my Clubby for 12 months, reached 12k miles this week, and don't have a service plan at the moment.

Just checked the link that evo1986 provided and it says I can get my first 2 services (1 Oil Service and 1 Oil and Inspection Service) for £386 which sounds like good value.

The question, is when are those 2 services likely to be required?  My car is on a 3 year lease (so 2 years to go) and the way prices are at the moment it's likely I'll extend that by 12 months.

Are both of the prepaid services likely to happen within the first 3 years and 36k miles?  If not surely they'll happen in the first 48 months and 48k miles won't they?

My first service has come up at 12 months for an oil change (5600 miles) next one would be the inspection service then after that oil. I’d assume you’d reverse them so you'd have your inspection first then the oil service

Cheers Foxy.

I'll have to see when my first service is indicated when my car is back this afternoon.  I suspect it'll be due within a few weeks.   As the EA888 is chain driven rather a cambelt I'm hoping I won't see any major garage costs even if I keep it to 48k miles and 4 years.  Might have to get a get an extended warranty for year 4 just for reassurance though, because I'm very risk averse.

The two services will see me out on this one for me over three years. Dump the third service onto whoever has it after me.

The service plan is pretty good value tbh.

Now this seems odd.  Checked my car tonight and it says Oil change service in 4200 miles/276 Days & Inspection in 8000 miles/371 Days.

Given that the car is already 12 months old and has covered 12000 miles I would have expected it to need a service much sooner.   Especially when you consider that Foxy's car needed a service at 12 months and 5,600 miles.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

Foxy’s car is set to fixed servicing (9.3K or 12 months interval), yours is set to flexible which is condition based with a maximum interval of 18k or 24 months

I wonder if yours could be on a flexible service schedule and mine is on a fixed?

It’s down to whether or not your car is on a fixed or variable service regime, I’ve just this morning had my car changed to fixed servicing by the dealership, this means it will be due every 12 months or 10000 miles, the car was originally set to variable which meant it would be determined by the car dependent upon driving style, so could have gone to 20k or beyond before deciding a service was due, that’s too long in my opinion.

Yeah fixed vs variable.

Given that a "service" is either an oil change or looking for things they can charge you for, the variable doesn't bother me.

Its not like the olden days when cars actually needed things looking at every 10k.

Thanks for the info everyone.  That would certainly explain it.

I was thinking that I'd been driving like Miss Daisy to get my service at 16000 miles when Foxy had his at 6000 (or Foxy drives like Colin McRae!)

Clearly variable servicing is good for me if I get 18 month intervals.

I didn’t get the choice but as my mileage is generally up to 10k per year I was happy with fixed to be honest. I decided against the engine flush, I did some more Googling (is that a word) and decided it was an unnecessary expense. As an aside the software hasn’t been updated it has to go in for two days at the end of the month. The dealership use a call centre who basically have no idea of how long things take and therefore just booked it in for a service. The helpful girl in the dealership told me they’d need it for longer! Oh and they wanted my engine cover which was in my garage for them to dispose of!!!

Based on that fixed/flexible service link I should get away with three services even if I keep the car for 4 years.

1st service (oil service) – at up to 18,600 miles or 24 months
2nd service – at up to 18,600 after the previous service or when your car is 48 months old.
3rd service – at up to 18,600 after the previous service or when your car is 72 months old.

Might get away with two if I never accelerate or brake!  :smug:

I was offered the engine flush on my MK7.5 at the start of this year (2nd service) at only 5.5K miles. I declined immediately, I am sure it is just another 'money maker' for a task that does not need doing.
