how much of a mare is this to do? is it a full steering lock/barrel removal job or is there a sneaky way around it??
its an early spec car with earlier electrics and steering column shroud.
Cheers,
Craig

same applies mate

apparently if you get a small screwdriver & bend the end you can just get the screw undone without removing the ignition shroud. Not done it myself though ;)
-
right i changed it on saturday and it didnt make the slightest difference to my starting probs!!
as for changing it. easiest was is
remove steering wheel
remove stalks
undo bottom universal joint below pedals
withdraw whole steering column and lock
bend screwdriver to get at screw for switch!!
if your car is pre 88 with the smaller steering wheel fitment then you can withdraw the steering lock without removing whole coulmn but if its post 88, then it has the new adapter on it and you've no hope of shifting it!!
not that bad a job to attempt
still doenst fix my prob of the car taking forever to start. turns over for ages, the seems to fire when you release the key (sometimes!). checked all earths etc but they are clean. what else can it be?
-
Hey, it sounds like i've developed the same problem as you, didnt you ever get to the bottom of it?
-
aye a new set of spark plugs solved it........seriously!!
-
I know you said pre88 but i've got a 89 small bumper model will i have the smaller steering wheel firmet is there a way i can tell?
the barrel seems to be in a metal body that goes around the steering column and then has one allan key on the left that clamps the two halves of the metal body together, is the steering lock?
cheers
-
aye, you'll have the later steering wheel. easiest way is to undo the universal joint at the bottom of the column and remove the column that way
-
cheers for the info so far, is there anything i should note when undoing the joint bolt in the footwell?
and is the universal joint the only thing that stops the column being pulled out of the dash, if so could i not just leave the steering wheel attached and just undo the plugs on the back, or am i being doughnut
and i take it back i've got an F reg car it was just registered in 89 so i think it might be the same as yours.
cheers
-
only thing you need to remember about the universal joint is when refitting you need to line up the groove in the bottom of the column with the two bolt holes in the UJ otherwise the bolt wont go thru. u'll see when you get it out
not sure if you could leave the steering wheel and stalks on - easier to remove seeing as its only a bolt and 3 screws! but you defo need to undo the allen key bolt on the steering lock to remove it.
-
is this the small steering wheel fitment, cos i've done the allen key bolt on the left side and the lock unit doesnt want to slide up, if it isnt then that explains it and i'll guess i'll have to undo the bolts at the joint

Thats the large spline adaptor on the end of the column, you have to remove this first or drop the column as said!
-
cheers, switch fitted all seems running fine.
it really is a 35 min job
now just need to find out why my mk3 isnt running and i'll be a happy man  thanks all.
