Title: Squeeking Noise!!! HELP!!
Post by: Neaty on 19 October 2005, 09:05
Hello all

in the last couple of days a squeeking noise has developed from the offside wheel arch sort of area, i think its the drive shaft boot rubbing against the anti-roll bar! Why is this doing this??, the car has been lowered 55mm, does anyone know how to stop this, can you get smaller drive shaft boots? It is driving me mad! has anyone else had this problem

make sure its not the wheel rubbing the archs, i got a 60mm drop and its standard boot on it cause i had one replaced and i think the last owner may have done the other one as it was brand new.

i would smear abit of oil on the suspect areas and see if the noise goes away.

Oil on rubber is not reccomended but i do it anyway

no its not wheel bearing its a rubber squeeking noise,

it has actually stopped momenterilly but now i have said that it'll prb start up again on my way home from work!
i had a look behindthe wheel tho and couldnt see naything that is close enough for it to rub against (thats on the hub end) what is in close proximity at the end that meets the gearbox? could be rubbing at that end!

only thing that is close to the gearbox is the other end of the driveshaft and a rubber boot on that bit. Cannot think what it making the squeaking sound though, as if the boot was rubbing on it, it would have come off by now. They are not amazingly strong.  :undecided: :undecided:

I would advise just to drop the shafts off the diff and see if you can move that around, it might be a case that the diff bearings have gone which would account for both of them moving around. I had the same problem, fortunately i wanted to swap to a 8v box, so came at the right time for me.

New developments with my strange noises!!

I now only get a sort of clunking noise with a bit of a squeek when i put a bit of right lock on!!
do you reckon that there is some inner wing catching somewhere?
i have put it on full lock both ways and had a look behind the wheel and cant see anything that the drive shaft boot could be touching!

any assistance is much appreciated

could it be the cv joint?

the clunking noise would suggest so...and it could be rubbing on the inside of the boot... :undecided:

cheers

i think i will get the wheel off (or get my mechanic to) and take off all the inner trim crap just to make sure that it doesnt catch, hten have a look what the noise is!! its quite concerning when i turn right coz its quite loud!!
i was thinking about taking it to the stealership to see what they say but they prob wont have a clue, prob never seen or worked on a mark 2 golf in their lives!

your best bet would be to find a small(ish) garage and have a chat with them...if they seem interested in cars in more than a money making way then i'd go with them...thats what i done, found a garage with a vw nut who knows everything that you wouldn't dream of!

I know a guy who works/co-owns a vw specialist but he is lazy as f@#k so i tend to just use him for parts. I htink i will take it down to him and get him to have a look for me

That sounds like your best bet mate, especially if you haven't got a clue where to star looking...you could be there all day and not find it otherwise...I know from experience!!
