Ok so here goes.
I have been offered a brand new Clubsport in white with the winter pack at £33,500. It lists at £39,050. Here is my first concern. That list price includes the April price increase so if there is another between April and actually get my hands on the car, it could push me into the high road tax bracket of which I do not want to pay. How often do VW drop these price increase? When was the last one?
The estimated delivery date is Dec/Jan 2022 which as we all know might not actually happen unless anyone as any inside info on this. Is it likely to be longer?
Next thing is. I have a Mk8 standard GTI. Is the change to a clubsport worth the wait? The deal is mega and needs to be done before the end of the month.
What are people thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
-
No brainer in my eyes, £33,500 for a brand new car is cheap
-
Looks a very good deal to me.
Add on the extra tax cost for 3 years, or whatever it is.
..still a very good deal

Are you sure that's the post April list price? Looks like the current one and if so no doubt it will be over £40K come April. Also given evo1986's post, which hopefully he will clarify, regarding possible spec changes/deletions it might not come with everything at least as currently advertised.

Sorry my bad, the £39,050 is the price BEFORE the price rise in April, so have to order it before end of the month.

So by the time it gets delivered the list price will more than likely be over £40K so you will liable for the higher VED anyway regardless if you order now at the current price. As the other poster mentioned it's still a good deal even with the higher VED.

In the days of very few discounts available, it sounds a great offer.
If the chances are you’ll end up in the “luxury” car tax bracket anyway, can you alter the order? And how much is it to add DCC?
I’ve not driven a non-DCC car so don’t want to speak out of line and say it’s a “must have” but DCC is very very good indeed. On twisty and bumpy British roads special mode is so much more compliant than sport mode. From what I’ve read, the non-DCC setup is somewhere between the two.
-
I think the last price increase was 1st December 2021. With a further increase due 1st April, then I’d hazard a guess there’d be at least one more price increase before year end. If so, then there’s a good chance a Clubsport with a current list price of £39,050 will list at over £40k by the start of next year.

Think DCC is another £800-£900. I don’t have it in my standard Mk8 GTI so my thoughts are I can’t miss what I have never had!
The lady rang back and I clarified that the £39,050 does include Aprils price rise. So, if there is another price rise between April and getting the car it will push me into the height bracket.
Just not sure if I should just stick with what I have but to move up to the clubsport, it’s going to cost me no more a month other than the higher tax possibly. Really not sure what to do.

Do you know what the price increase was in December 21?

Do it....
If there's no or minimal financial repercussions I can see no reason why you wouldn't do it.
Ask yourself this, will you have more regrets if you do or if you don't go for it?
Write on a sheet of paper two columns, for and against and see how it pans out.
Oh and finally. Just do it....Life's too short to have regrets.

I like your way of thinking and that’s the road I’m going down. I’m coming to terms of maybe having to pay the high tax but is it that much different to my standard GTI is what’s holding me back now.

Well, you know my thoughts on the car Adam!! I would definitely go for it. Your bits and bobs plus wheels will all be ready to be swapped straight over to it too. Well, apart from the key skins but that’ll give you an excuse to buy the red ones!

2% according to this discussion thread started by Lee Evans (evo1986)

So if it was 2% again then I would still be under 40k and that big if like!

Was talking to my dealer today and they are quoting 60 plus weeks lead time
In saying that i think it’s a great deal especially as your payments are staying the same
Your going into a brand new car with a higher resale value than your own at the same cost
As for paying extra for the tax it may or may not happen
First year tax is included in your price so depends how long you plan to keep the car how much extra it will cost you but I think the resale on your on the Clubsport will more than cover the extra tax cost

Good way to look at it that. I think I’m going to do it. 60 weeks is nuts though!

At least by the time it comes you may have one with no software issues and updated hardware
Plus you may find some changes to specification like led back lit controls for the heater
As for the deletion of options I was told once a car was ordered with a spec it would not come with any lesser /deleted specifications
Option deletions will only apply to new orders and the dealer should inform you if this is the case at time of order
When’s the face lift due ? Could you possibly end up with a face lifted car
Good luck with the decision

Again some valid points there. It’s that long away I have plenty time to reconsider or should I say talk myself out of it!

That sounds like an incredible deal at the moment, I thought we wouldn't see discounts like that again for years.
-
I think its a bit early for a facelift... Even in normal times.
VW are a little bit stretched right now with Mk8 problems, covid backlogs, chip shortages and now wiring loom supply problems caused by the "Special Military Operation"
They have multiple assembly lines totally shut down at the moment!
Personally, I think you might be foolish to assume the date they have given, I'd guess its 18 months plus and probably even then with spec deletes.
-
I agree that it's an incredible deal with the current state of the car market. Maybe once you have it locked in, you can share details of where the deal arose. Wait for it to be locked though - I wouldn't want you to get gazumped!

@Boothy1979; Fred makes a good, valid point about a longer lead time than Dec22/Jan; possibly 18 months. Lots of dependencies though affecting future lead times; e.g. size of the Golf order backlog to work through, how long it will take for VW’s supply chain to get back to anything approaching normality, continued impact of Covid (e.g. a new surge of cases in China has forced VW to shut down production facilities in affected areas; any new future variants affecting Europe could see VW taking similar action with the Wolfsburg plant).
If it does transpire that an estimated Dec22/Jan23 delivery becomes a May/June 23 delivery, then assuming VW increase their prices every 6 months or so, there could be a further 2 price increases on top of next month’s increase before you take delivery which increases the chance of the list price tipping over £40k.
It is a very good deal you’ve been offered and IMHO life’s too short to dwell on if’s, buts and maybe’s, but in your position I’d be assuming there’s a realistic chance that the list price could well be above £40k by the time you take delivery. I’d like to be proved wrong though!

You all make valid points and I’m under no illusion that that delivery date given will 99.9% not be the date it will arrive. The only thing I’m looking at right now is the price. I can’t get any other garage to get anywhere near that price and if I’m honest I have now come to accept that it will prob push over 40k. Even with the higher road tax it’s still an amazing deal.
The only other thing that I’m holding onto is the fact it’s all done over the phone so slightly protected by the distance seller laws. Means I can pull out and most likely get my deposit back. Plus I’m only 8 months into my PCP deal on my Standard MK8 GTI so not in any rush to get it.
She is calling me back shortly to go through a few things as I’m going to spec DCC as I’m going to end up in the 40k list price anyway so might as well have someone on there I want.
Really appreciate everyone’s comments on this, I tend to over think a lot on things like this so this all helps.

Done it! Ordered. So gone for pure white and DCC. Considered the winter pack but don’t have it in mine now and can’t say I have missed the heated seats from my last car. On the road price with DCC is £33,915.50! The nearest VW dealership has offered me a standard club with no extras at £37,800! This is through motorfinity and is BlueLightCard discounted. I asked about 4 times where is the catch on the price but said they go direct to VW. Shows how much garages are making on the cars!
-
Congrats. And I think a good decision at a (relative) bargain, like you said, worse case during the time it takes to come, if you change your mind you can make your excuses and cancel.

Thanks mate. To be honest I’m treating like it’s not going to happen and then when it shows up it’s a bonus. Had a VW garage call as I had out some feelers out to make sure the deal was the best out there, it is by a country mile, but the car that called said ‘you do know there will be a 14 month wait for one’.
Let’s see what happens. My name is down for any cancellations of earlier orders. One due in September that she thinks is going to be cancelled.

Hopefully you won’t have the same “catch” as I did. I ordered a brand new fully loaded Mini Cooper S through a broker with a substantial discount (21%) The order was accepted by Mini and I got an order number. About a month in the order was cancelled by Mini stating they they were cancelling all third party orders to protect their own dealer network from supply issues. My take on this was they had decided they could make more money by cutting out the loss leader deals they had been happy to take to keep ticking over during the first covid lockdown because of increased demand from franchised dealers orders with far less discount applied and more profit for them.
Best of luck 🤞

That’s is poor and sorry to hear you lost that order.
It sounds like you were in a similar position to me so fingers crossed this won’t happen.
Just received the order details from Listers VW in Nuneaton. This is where the car is coming from. To be honest, I’m not really thinking the car will ever turn up. It’s a long long way off and a lot of things can change between now and then. I’m just happy I have a great deal (in my eyes), and if it turns up at that price then I’m onto a winner.
Let’s see what happens.

I’ve had 5 cars from Listers Nuneaton. Never had a problem with this dealership or Listers in general. They have always been spot on with me 👍 It’s just the small matter of the car getting built and shipped to the UK that is the worry and that’s largely out of their hands 😬
I still got the Mini albeit with a slightly smaller haggled discount from my local Mini dealership and have to say it all worked out well and I love my little weekend warrior 👍

Congrats on your order. I placed an order for an R with Listers VW in Nuneaton, via AutoeBid, back in November last year. At that time I was told I could cancel at anytime right up until the car was in the UK and I would be refunded in full. With that in mind, togther with the discounted price, the order was a no brainer.
