Title: Golf GTi 2019 performance bad fuel consumption
Post by: Ex on 08 March 2022, 13:28
I’ve got 2019 GTi performance my car has started with exact same symptoms loss of 10 mpg on all cycles gone from 40 + on mway to 28 & from 32 urban to 20 mpg steady driving.also exhaust tone louder and jerky in stop/start traffic.just wondered if anyone has solved issue as my local dealer is useless they say there’s nothing wrong as no fault codes or warning lights on
Many thanks

I had suddenly louder exhaust note for a couple of days. Dealer said they had another customer with identical car, similar age and mileage to mine with your symptoms as well. Espec the fuel consumption.
They said it was down to GPF re-gen.
My car was investigated. No faults found and reverted to usual exhaust note.
But some on this forum dispute that GPF re-gen is a “thing”.
Personally, I have no idea but have moved on.

Have you done lots of short “cold” journeys this winter?
I have.
Maybe……..??

On GPF / OPF cars, short cold journeys will also mean the GPF / OPF will be more likely to accumulate soot, so regens may be more frequent / more noticeable.

Weekdays I drive 4 miles on a roads and 26 miles on mway so shouldn’t soot up and it will be up to operating temp.I wish a warning light was on it would be easy for dealer to fix although I find the dealers keep everything close to their chests when it comes to faults.had the car 9 months and economy never dropped lower than 41 going
To work and even into 50’s going to coast.had a new water pump in November but still maintained mpg  so I’ve noticed on forum a few GTi with same faults as mine after new pump fitted.exhaust really loud too in all modes and doesn’t alter even when in eco could something be stuck open in manifold or exhaust ? I’ve heard of similar faults on polo GTi down to regen of gpf but this has been like this for 3 weeks now dealer plugged in and no faults ???

I had these exact same symptoms a few weeks ago on my 2019 PP. Fuel consumption plummeted, it was snatchy at low speed (almost felt like a misfire) and the exhaust noise was intrusive. Car went in for an annual service and I asked the dealer to investigate but there were no fault codes and they could not find anything wrong. Beforehand the car had a spate of short journeys in cold weather so I'd suspected this wasn't helping

These symptoms went on for about 2 weeks and I'd read about the regen so wondered if the car was "stuck" in this mode and needed clearing. I thus followed advice of getting the engine oil temp properly warm (95-97 degrees) and then doing 10 sets of accelerating to 70mph/lift-off for 10 secs/accelerating back up to 70mph.

This cleared all the negative symptoms immediately and my daily MPG is now back to 35 as a minimum on my semi-urban commute and 40mpg with a bit of effort, no more snatchy drivetrain and a quieter exhaust. Might be worth a try?

Yup, just needs an Italian tune up now and again.

Can’t say I’ve ever had this.

I do varied driving, at least once a week a fastish drive on a roads, with several roundabouts which allows me to get through the gears to high rpm.
