Title: GTI estate
Post by: Dazie00 on 21 February 2022, 09:59
I don't know if this has been covered before, apologies if it has.

So my question  is are VW missing a trick by never releasing a GTI estate?

I guess you can buy a Seat with the same engine or Audi if you want, but a GTI with a little more room, say you're a golfer or have bigger dogs it may force you to look at buying  other brands .
I know they do the R in  estate but only in DSG .

Thoughts??

The original concept of the Golf GTI was for it to be a performance hot hatch, so VW probably decided to stay true to that original GTI ethos for subsequent GTI models. Other non-Golf models within VW’s range of vehicles that wear the GTI badge aren’t available as an estate either and AFAIK never have been.

As you’ve said, there are other VAG alternatives available for buyers who want a performance estate car.

Yeah, an estate goes against the GTI ethos. The end.
We’ll ignore the Jetta GTI! (Saloon not Estate but not a hatchback)
The R is a range topper so can translate into anything, Estate, SUV and so on, as long as it packs the biggest power punch of the range.
The GTD just about gets away with being an Estate but an Estate GTI is sacrilege!

Can see were you are coming from as i nearly bought an STcupra a couple years back and one of my mates has a mk7 R estate another has a vRS estate. I guess VW have to draw the line on models somewere. Todays market also seems to be all about SUVs.

A GTI Estate…..there are/have been many pretenders. A VRS?- a bit too big.  Leon / Cupra?… not quite.  An R is formidable but not as popular as it merits imho.  VAG probably sell mor pretenders than that would the real thing so that may be a partial  answer too.

Thanks for the replies,
I love the heritage of it being (known) as the original hot hatch and guess they just don't want to water that down, start with an estate, what next, a SUV ???
I'm quite glad that they haven't done it but if they had it would be on my drive for sure .
