Title: Ethanol/E10 Additive
Post by: jaceyboy on 28 January 2022, 08:22
Noticed our GTi is now struggling to make 300 miles on a tank of E10 Unleaded, wondered if there was an adative to counter the E10 back to lower levels or am I better off running on Super Unleaded E5?

From what I've read, E10 is about 3% less fuel efficient than previous unleaded. Given the price differential, I'd expect super unleaded to still cost more than E10. I've stuck with Momentum 99 for a few years now (the TCR demands it anyway) and my previous PP did seem to run a bit better.

Apart from one fill up of E5 last September due to the fuel shortage, I’ve only ever used Shell V Power E5 99 RON, no intention of using E10 - why fill up with something that makes your car less efficient?

Not sure how you could "fix" this.... the difference between E5 and E10 is more ethanol.

The only fix is to reduce the ethanol by volume.

You could one third fill your tank with E10 and two thirds 98? That would do something?

Or just fill it with 98.

The fuel range is about 3% less for E10, by my calculations the cost of 98 would exceed the range gained.

You could remove the ethanol (somehow), but removing 5% of the volume and replacing it with petrol means you'd still be paying for 5% of the "fuel" only to bin it. That doesn't make any sense.

Just suck it up would be my advice. Think about how you are contributing towards CO2 reduction.

In Brazil btw they have up to 28% Ethanol in their fuel...

Note that E10 is ‘up to’ 10% ethanol - not all producers use 10% Esso for example haven’t changed theirs.

I always use super in mine anyway (Costco/Tesco/other supermarket in order of preference)

A modified ECU will likely be optimised for SUL anyway.
Why scrimp £5 a tank (and likely fractionally better economy) by not using Super, especially when you’ve already poured in hundreds of £££ on mods?

True, I think next tank will be 98 and see how I get on
