Title: Clutch fitting
Post by: CS#303 on 13 December 2021, 11:24
Hi All,

My clutch is starting to slip  and at only 37k so not best pleased.
Anyway I'm going to fit a Helix but don't know where to get it done.

Anyone got any suggestions for decent garage in Sussex\Surrey?

Thanks!

Jason.

Is your car mapped if you dont mind me asking? I assume you have a Clubsport based on your username?

Hi Carbon VW.

No, not mapped and yes, it's Clubsport Ed40.

Cheers,

Jason.

My GTi Mk 7 220 bhp started with its clutch slipping at about 40 k miles.  No mods or anything, really strange for it to go so soon, I never did racing starts or held it on the clutch etc.  I bought it with 13k miles so it must have been thrashed before then.

Vas Motion in Guildford previously had a good reputation, not sure what it's like now.

Does sound like you could benefit from an uprated clutch to avoid this issue in the future, regardless if you're for remapping the car or not.

Could you post your resolution. Did you upgrade the clutch? If so what to? How much was it and who did you use?

The clutch in my CSS has just started to slip at 32000 miles.

Hi Ooosh,
No real resolution, I got quotes for an uprated clutch from both AKS and TC Garage and was mulling it over when my water pump & thermostat housing gave up, so spent on that instead.
The clutch slip is still there and only does it occasionally unless provoked (which I don't do anymore), so I'm riding my luck at the moment whilst my funds recover!
Good luck!
J.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry to hear about water pump and thermostat.

VW Indian queens (Cornwall) have quoted me just under £2000 including flywheel. I was expecting £1000-1200.

I priced the bits up before mine had the clutch done, under warranty thankfully.

Dual Mass Flywheel - £654-31

Clutch - £284-01

Clutch slave cylinder - £48-29

(retail prices, not sure if +vat)

And a load of torque to yield bolts needed too.

Think its about 9.5 hours labour, VW book time, as a 4 wheel alignment is necessary due to dropping the subframe.

Both my quotes included uprated (either Sachs or Helix) clutches and flywheels and were just about the £2k mark including VAT.
It's pretty big job, there is a guide to doing it yourself on youtube, I'm in two minds about trying it, but would still need to have the alignment re-done as the subframe has to come off.
On the upside the VAQ diff has to come out so good opportunity to change it's oil!
