which relay is the fan relay on an 88 valver ?
as I have fitted the twin speed fan but am missing the wire from the relay for the fast speed
I know the relay on the 87 the fan came from is 220 I have the relay and the wireing etc but am hopeing I can just insert the missing wire route it through and change the relay
other than that if anyone can identifie where these wires go and I can fit the 86 relay and wireing
or how about where these wires go on an 86 8v gti from the fan relay
pin 31 on relay or 6 on plug brown I assume earth since it was into the main earth on the loom
T on relay 5 on plug brown again with black cover
pin 15 on relay 2 on plug black
pin 87 relay pin 8 plug red &white to fan red & white wire
pin 30 relay 4 plug red thick constant live

Not sure where the relay is tbh, or even if there is one! According to the Haynes there isn't one on the fusebox at least.
As for the wiring, there are only 2 supply wires, live & earth. These then plug into the 2 speed radiator temp sender, and 3 wires come off this and plug into the rad fan. I have a spare 2 speed fan loom I could take a piccy of if you want :)
-
the problem is our twin speed fan loom has an extra wire a blue one that goes to the red and white wire pin 87 from the relay
and if I tap this into a live the fan comes on :undecided:
and since I was a clever sod and removed the fuse box months ago and the fan wireing the other day I have no ideas :lipsrsealed:

That must go to the after run sensor on the manifold or block somewhere.
I know on my 8v it only has 2 wires, but the spare one I mentioned has an extra wire hanging off it.

right heres pic's of what I have
spare wire on fan loom

was plugged into the red and white wire shown in this pic with the end cut off

Like I say it must be for an extra engine thermoswitch somewhere, on some models there is an extra sender that can switch the fan on if it gets too hot, possibly k-jet models? I know the Rallye also has one to stop the manifold cracking :)
If you just want basic 2 speed operation then the rad thermoswitch will take care of it for you, just like it is on my 1990 8v Digifant GTI :)
Edit: The loom I robbed from an 89 digifant GTI looked like the one you have and had that extra plug, but it wasn't plugged in anywhere.

so it should be working both speeds as it is now then with just the two wires pluged in as from how I see it the extra wire goes to the sender and fan
damn why did vw have to keep changeing stuff
-
Yup, the sensor will activate both speeds based on coolant temp, to test it get summat metal like a paper clip and bridge the pins 2 at a time on the radiator temp sender plug, it should switch on both speeds.
I'll trawl thru the wiring diagrams and find out where that extra sensor is and how its all wired in :)
My guess is it goes from the sensor to a relay on the fusebox which switches on a 12v feed to that plug.

I'd agree with that
I'd be very gratefull if you could figure how it's supposed to be wired in mate
I am proper confused by it Lol but I would prefer to run it as vw intended if poss but so far that's not poss
