I know this has been discussed ages ago. I wondered if anyone has tried fitting these, basically two springs that push the hatch open when you press the hatch-pop button on the key fob:

I wondered how easy it is to unscrew the head to actually fit the springs? And how hard it is to shut it afterwards?
There is a youtube video in the seller's ebay page - but at the end the guy says he removed the springs in the end.
Another option is vw-retrofit in Redditch, Alex there fits two new struts for £85 and on seeing his on his car, they seem to work really well.

Don't know if this is still an issue, but I seem to recall a few years when these pop up springs were all the rage, that longterm they caused some damage to the area where the strut meets the tailgate bending and in some cases tearing the sheet steel.
Don't know if these issues have been sorted on later versions of the mod though ?

I can vaguely remember this being an issue too.
Also worth bearing in mind that if the car is parked in locations with restricted height - e.g. some multi storey car parks or in a garage with a low roof - there may be a risk of damage to the tailgate if it’s popped open without realising there’s limited height. As the tailgate opens, it could make contact (possibly with some force) with overhead concrete support beams, garage roof or an up and over garage door.

I also seem to remember that some folks took them off because of the issue of shutting the boot and complaints from 'other' users of the car.

I bought and fitted the struts from Alex at vw Retrofit around 12 months ago,a very easy install-just remember to prop your tailgate.
Touch wood, had no issues, yes the tailgate is harder to close, but it’s only slightly harder.
I don’t think they are powerful enough to tear sheet steel or bend the tailgate.
The only thing I’m paranoid about is parking too close to a wall and catching the tailgate as it opens.
A very handy, relatively cheap mod in my opinion.

Hi, I was at VW-retrofit last week for a reversing amera to be fitted (and very pleased with the garage and the camera). Alexh had the struts there and could fit them for £85. I'd just paid £360 for the camera, and it was a bit too much for an impulse buy. But his struts did seem good.
How much were they for DIY fitting, inc postage?

I've heard a lot of people say that they've just installed one strut. Doesn't open as quickly but is easier to close. Just an idea.

martin998877,
They were £85 delivered, very easy to fit.
sjw,
With the struts from Alex you can fit both no problem, when I first looked it fitting the auto pop mod,it was the American struts by ECS I think it was, which were too aggressive.
