Just got along side a taxi driver and the idiot decided on a U turn without looking, and I’m the casualty

Oh no!
Hopefully they stopped and you managed to get their details 🤞
-
Yes Abdul the taxi driver did stop, and said " i was indicating, you should have stopped" i then said i had it all on dashcam, immediately he then said i will pay, dont go through insurance. He offered £1100, which i declined, took pics and details, and immediately went to VW bodyshop for an estimate. Its booked in next Tuesday.
-
I'd be going through insurance, just in case he decides to play silly buggers when it's time to pay up. I have been in that situation.
-
Yes the cash offer is no where near the repair cost. So now he knows its the insurance way
-
Depending on how badly the rear quarter panel is damaged that's potentially not an easy repair.
My Octavia suffered similar damage a few years back and the VW approved bodyshop charged the other party's insurance company nearly £3k.
-
I swear that driving has got worse since lockdown. Perhaps to many people got use to driving without others on the road. The things I see every day now make my mind boggle.
-
That is so unfortunate, and I am really sorry to see this damage here. I was following a taxi today, it pulled out of a side road when I did not expect it to, and then for the next couple of miles I did not see the driver use the indicators once! I am not tarring all taxi drivers with the same brush, but the standard of driving was abysmal!
-
The Bill for the damage is £2900. Only going to use the VW bodyshop, in case it has warranty issues in the next couple of years

I’d only use VW too. Can the wheel be repaired to a good standard, or is that for a new one?

You can also use a VW Approved body shop rather than a VW body shop.

The wheel looks ok, but it’s down for a new one. Estimated said it’s a new car, so the wheel won’t be refurbished

Might be worth asking if you can keep the damaged wheel. Get it refurbed and save it for a rainy day?

Is there space for a full sized spare in the mk8?
-
No, only a space saver
-
Yes im going to ask if i can have the wheel.
I do have a space saver spare, it fits perfectly
-
No, only a space saver
Do the clubsport and R models get a space saver? I’m just wondering because the space saver must be approximately 16/17” to go over the front brakes?
-
Nobody just gets one on a Mk8.... you have to option it.
-
Ahh ok. I haven’t got that option then.
You’ve got me intrigued now, I know on the dynaudio the sub worked in conjunction with the spare to resonate the sound. Is the HK pack not set up this way? I’ve read your comments about it not being as good?
-
On the earlier thread some folks who specc’d HK seemed to get a space saver thrown in they weren’t expecting but don’t think was ever cleared up that they work together / have to have a wheel with Hk.
Am sure I’ve seen pictures of the sub without a spare wheel somewhere.
-
I've got HK and a spare.... I don't think its bundled. Never really questioned it as my car was dealer stock.
I'm starting to like HK a bit more than I did now too. I've messed with it a lot to get it setup to where I am happy now and also through a process of experimenting, understand the "mood" buttons now.
If only VW had bothered to supply some documentation I'd have got here much quicker...
It is annoying though that I find you do have to use the mood buttons between different types of audio and also that the "surround" feature makes everything sound very weird, so have that slider in the off position.
-
I have HK and to my surprise and disappointment, didn't get a spare wheel. Not ideal.
-

I would have thought it’s yours regardless of it being replaced by a new one in the insurance claim?

In reality, there may not be an issue in @valentino keeping the damaged alloy if they ask for it back, but technically I think it belongs to the insurance company if they’ve replaced it with a new one as part of the repairs under a claim - I dare say insurance companies have an arrangement to sell salvaged vehicles and salvaged parts within the trade to help offset the cost of claim repairs.
When a car’s repaired under an insurance claim, the objective of the insurance company is to put the policyholder back in the same position after completion of the repairs as they were in before the damage occurred. If a damaged alloy is replaced with a new one but the owner keeps the original damaged one, then they’ve ended up in a better position as they now have five alloys when they originally had four.
Certainly no harm in asking for for it back though .

Did ask about keeping the damaged one. Was told that it will actually belong to the insurance company. Also even if it is only cosmetic, there may be underlying damage which cannot be seen, and if it were to cause an accident, then they would be liable. So its a no.

That’s what I thought would be the response.
Good luck with the repairs. If you’re able to, I recommend you take someone impartial with you when you collect your car after it’s been repaired. They can provide an unbiased view on quality of the repairs - e.g. accuracy of matching the colour, shade and finish of new paint to the original factory paint, size and evenness of panel gaps adjacent to repaired/repainted panels, any unwanted paint overspray on door seals, trim and glass etc. An impartial person with no emotional attachment to your car may spot things that you possibly won’t.

Thanks, will do

I feel your pain, a truck merged into mine...

Oh dear, the insurance premiums on Golf 8 GTI’s will be skyrocketing at this rate
-
Andy, i feel your pain too. If it was clearly the the lorry drivers fault, get your estimate from the VW bodyshop associated with the dealer you bought it from. Dont put it through your own insurance, ask about VW assist and ax claims company, who will do all the work on your behalf. Hope that helps

Thanks for the info, has yours been sorted yet?? I think my situation might be a little different, I'm from Ireland and was 20 miles off the ferry in Wales.. Not a great start to my first trip in years  My insurance company are willing to go after his, so hopefully it's straight forward, I wasn't even moving when he merged into the car.
Already been to VW for repair quote, was surprised they're recommending fixing the door and spraying the bumper, I would have thought swapping the bumper & panel, quarter panel is to be replaced and sprayed, think I'll sell when it's finished..
-
Not been fixed yet, at VW bodyshop. Just got hire car courtesy of AX. Might be a couple of weeks before i get mine back. Good luck with yours Andy

I noticed something interesting last night, my sister messaged as she’s considering changing her T-Roc for a golf 8, I was looking through the brochure to see what each model gets and noticed the space saver option isn’t available for the Clubsport, 45 or R. Presumably due to the wheel well not being large enough to fit a space saver to go over the larger brakes.

After a quick scan, I originally read that you'd been given a courtesy Citroën AX!

Dont think that would be acceptable  Got a 69plate Mk7.5 GTI--nice
