Title: Michelin PS4 vs Goodyear Asymmetric 5
Post by: Rob_benton on 25 August 2021, 08:45
Hi

I’ve had 18” PS4 on my car for a couple of years now. I’ve been pleased with them but the wear hasn’t been great.
I’ve read the reviews and tests and there doesn’t seem to be much difference between them. The Goodyear are said to have better run protection.
Has anyone owned both tyres on their Gti ?

Thanks

At one time, back in the 70s, Michelin would last for ever, but grip was appalling, particularly in the wet. Generally the grippier that tyres the less miles they will do.

And in the 90's. Michelin were rock hard and got '000s of miles. Yokohama's were like pencil rubbers and lasted as long as a bike tyew

Currently between the 19's Michelin PS4S' on the mk7, 18s with Goodyear Asymmetric 5's on the mk5 and Goodyear Ultragrips 18s for winter.

I like the Goodyear AS5's on the mk5, I'd regard them as the perfect tyre for all year round for a GTI, great driving road feel, quite quiet, comfortable. I don't push them in the wet but they're very good then as well.

In comparison with the 19's Michelin PS4S', not that much in it tbh they're very similar, they're wearing quite well about 10-15k miles on them and they're at around 7mm.

Note I also got my Goodyear AS5's for £320 fitted versus at the time I was quoted £440 for the 18inch PS4's.

My PS4's with about 8k on them are at 4mm on the front, and 8mm on the back. Lead feet I guess.

not advisable with that amount of miles on. It'll drive like sh!t because of different camber settings between front and rear.

You get good side wall protection with the Goodyears too. Recently got them on my car all round for just under £300 fitted and OMG the difference is excellent. No more wheel spin when pulling off at roundabouts etc like I was getting with the cheap tyre it came on, plus better confidence in the wet etc. I think the Goodyears are the best all round and at a reasonable price, the PS4 ones are for people who want the very top and the best grip possible in the wet (although the Goodyears are far behind at all) and also don't mind paying premium prices for (although they can be similar if the right deal pops up).

This video is without a doubt the best one to answer your questions:

If anyone is a Costco member then PS4's should be coming on offer next week. Decent price vs most other places.
