Title: Fuel options

I have a 1985 Mk2 Golf GTI (8 valve). I have been using a lead substitute called zero lead 2000 (made by Superblend) with unleaded. The additive company has gone bust, what are the other options for my car - can I have it converted to take unleaded or can anyone suggest a decent lead substitute?

Should be OK to run on Optimax I'd guess as the octane level is high enough. I've run mine on it with out any problems from pinking or valve seats even though it's running on a TSR heavily modded head.

Does anyone know of a good faq/guide on fuels regarding the mkII. I kind of understand what the low octane fuel can do. But as I am out trying to buy one at the moment I'm a little concerned about any long term damage to a car if past owners have just been filling up with cheap low octane unleaded.

afaik the higher the octane the more pressure the fuel can take before it spontaniously ignites without the spark. so if you drive it hard the higher octane fuel is better :)

I'm probably wrong though.

The fuel has to be high octane, lead doesn't come into it. The only reason people used to use 4 star is because it was high octane. VW engines since the late seventies do not require lead, unlike some old ford engines where without lead the valve seat break up. Optimax or superunleaded will work fine with k-jet engines.
