Looks like Volkswizard and Tim Rodie will be doing reviews soon based on their twitter photos.

Hard to disagree with anything there, the power of marketing!
The armrest material change is strange, adding Dsg paddles from the R and red edged belts from the Cs-S (bucketed CS) would have been cheap interior upgrades over the regular CS?
-
I wonder if the armrest material / door cards is simply a MY22 change across the GTI range? Wouldn't surprise me. They often make little inexplicable changes like that in the new "MY" cycles.
Their marketing is all over the place tbh. Why do the 45 Seats have "GTI" logos on them when its "45" on the steering wheel. And the standard CS has no logo on the seats at all... nor a "Clubsport" badge to be found on either car. You truly need your VW anorak well fastened to keep up with the differences.
-
Did anyone else think the standard sound of the clubsport was better than the akra?
-
Really wanted to like the E45 and would select it over the CS for the Akra and think special grey paint? but as Volkswizard pointed out there is some strange misses? This is from a company that each year has a team of young talent produce concepts for display at Worthersee.
But having a 45 on seat instead of GTI, keeping the leather effect on the armrest, having 45 badged mats, a mention of clubsport somewhere! (If i had a clubsport i would be having the MK 7 Clubsport decals placed on the MK 8) and no power lift, not even a 20BHP one?
My TCR was displayed at Worthersee, and is quite well aligned to the concept car, and its clearly a TCR, especially if went for the TCR door graphics, the original clubsport had some identity, we all knew this was a clubsport, they may as well have stuck to the TCR as the standard offering for the MK8, and made the 45 the clubsport?
The 45 is still a great car as its a clubsport but its definitely missed the mark of opportunity on so many levels to be something a little more special - however, someone with a little bit of application and will, could do a mild transformation and correct all these misses and with the seats spend some money on a recover with the 45 decal, which yes is unlikely to be cheap, but its do able and then you have a car more looking of the special edition tag
The likely reason the 45 is mild transformation, is thats its the platform to a monster hybrid (as was expected for the MK8) E50 with real track aspirations with a standard time limited offering and limited edition, think they will really push everything into the 50 being something special, but this is VW and they likely turn it into an ID3-GTI

My Akra was same OOTB, you did wonder what you were getting for the extra £ aside from the aesthetics as they very pretty back there and weight reduction, but as miles are put on, the note gets deeper, the pops and cracks get louder, and without much effort, you just come up to a roundabout and as DSG drops gears you get some really decent overrun and cracks.
It was only when removed parcel shelf and had seat down to move a cabinet that realised how noticeable it is to outside world as with radio on and in well cossetted cabin you can be a bit insulated from it
Think the Akra is at least £1000 over priced, but now have it would be loathe to give up, the definitely add to the car being something a little bit more as walk up to it, complete the look, and now with near 10,000 miles on clock, the sound is sweet
Not sure why having to do some miles makes a difference, hopefully someone can explain? but its a fact it does.

My Initial thoughts were that it must be because the standard clubsport is more 'run in'. Makes sense i suppose.

The "GTi" logo on the seats doesn't surprise me, it;s literally carried over from the Ed40 CS, both cloth options of standard Lay-Z boy recliner and bucket seat have the "GTi" logo.

I think everyone will find we've been labelling the ED45 as a sticker and exhaust pack for some time now...
Don't get me wrong, both it and the normal CS (or even my normal GTI) are lovely cars that are really an incredible thing to drive. Get over all of the moans about buttons and software gremlins - the car as a piece of mechanical engineering is REALLY good.
Andrew is right, get a CS maybe add some extras.... for the same money as the ED45.
Much more sense....sure it isn't the "special" we all love from a Golf ED (or the TCR which was an out of the blue belter), but this time, its not special enough.
Maybe next time.... ED50 will be here by the time you've paid off your first Mk8 finance lol
-
Did not realise the Akra was clubsport oval, so thats unique and not off the shelf to the 45.
Just been reading another review and seen the 45 in grey, and if was getting a CS, despite the noted misses, it would definitely be a 45 for all the little adds, (actually in the loving marmite, as like the wheels, look really good against the grey)
-
Will watch the video later but Andrew has been saying from the moment it was announced that he didn’t regret waiting for the CS45. Personally I would. I think the anniversary models feel that bit more special personally. There’s no doubt that a CS makes more sense but then wouldn’t a base gti make more sense? Or a Clio? Yes, I’m being flippant, apologies! Buying a car doesn’t make sense in general really. I wouldn’t have changed my R for a CS yet but when the 45 came along I wanted one. Ramblings over.

I wondered whether the CS was worth the extra over the GTI and then watched umpteen reviews and videos on both. For me there was a significant difference between the two, perhaps more so than the mk7.5 GTI and Performance. I still have to explain to none anoraks the difference of what a CS is. I'm not convinced there is enough of a difference between the CS and the ED45 and would take even more explaining. I get its appeal but without the step up in performance (even an overboost) its just a badge engineering exercise for me and for the price takes it far closer to R territory.
But if you think about it the ED45 has come in very early in the GTI run and the mk8 is still fairly new. The other anniversarys have come later in the model cycle and have received a bigger upgrade. Perhaps we will see a Clusport S for the 50th anniversary who knows but if they did that could be something very special

That’s what I thought, i can’t take him seriously considering he said spending £3000 on his new wheel & tire was a better choice than have standard ED45 and complaining about the red on the black ED 45 wheels.
I will get the ED45 for £2000+ extra than spend £3000 on Andrew tire and wheels
-
I was surprised that he thinks his Vossen wheels are more in keeping with a gti. I’m not a fan at all but each to their own.
Andrew has some great videos but I do find them very contradictory at times.

That is an odd statement you're right but the Adelaide upgrade with DCC would look like a cheap option in comparison
-
I agree with most of Andrew’s sentiment in that video but I’m also not a fan of his wheel choice. I can’t believe he thinks it’s a good idea to spend 3k on those rims.

I'm with you. I still don't think they're in keeping with the Golf GTi heritage, despite what he says and the pics he showed on screen. They look like they're off a top spec Ford Focus

I wonder how much the ED45 seat covers would cost...I had my driver's side one replaced on my mk7.5 GTI as it was starting to fray with only 18k km. It was done under warranty so I don't know how much that would have cost.
Would anyone be tempted to replace the cheap looking door cards for alcantara ones or just have them reupholstered?

Not just a terrible review of the CS45 but a terrible review of the CS. But then they give it 4 stars. Hmmm

Just read that review and I'm not sure what to make of it. Looks like operator error to me. Nearly every review of the standard CS gives glowing results of the drive and the 45 should be the same as it's basically the same car and as for the moaning about the user interface, while it may not be popular the world pretty much moved on from button phones to buttonless without this much whinging, I think once we get used to buttonless few would change back, either way the reviewer sounds like someone I'd avoid at a party, man he's on a downer.

Totally agree. It’s the most contradictory review I think I’ve read. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Verdict: 4 stars. Lots of negatives about the CS with some of them just being down right odd. Eg. The car skates across the road surface because there’s no grip. Odd.

Bit of a mixed bag but I remember a few negative reviews of the ED40 and the TCR, but more so the ED40, I recall it was very much a poor relation to the Clubsport S in the eyes of several reviewers, many references to the overboost function. It is easy to be critical of VW but it was never marketed as anything but a trim upgrade.
Are these reviews objective? I simply do not understand how the ED45 can have a lower rating than the standard CS, sure it will appeal to less people but a lower score is complete bunkum, in my view.
If you like the wheels, want a titanium exhaust and a few other bits and bobs to differentiate your car from a standard CS then it represents good value, just a shame DCC is effectively a £2300 option.
Whilst I am looking forward to ED45 ownership a few doubts have recently crept in that I may regret selling my 3 door manual ED40, I will for sure miss those Recaros but at least I get GTI on the seat of the ED45 to soften the blow.
-
Good points there. I’d forgotten how disappointing the initial reviews were of the TCR. Some comments about ride quality.
Reviews in general are contradictory though. Good example is the Autocar mk1-8 gti road test. ‘The Mk7 is a 10 out of 10 car whereas the Mk8 is an 8. Well, actually in your mk7 review you gave it 4 stars.

Exactly King Monkey
Below are Mr Sutcliffe’s words from June 23rd (Auto Express) after he gave the ED45 4.5 stars! Quite different from the 1 to 8 article.
‘The new special edition Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 45 is one of the best cars ever to wear the GTI badge‘

Hilarious isn’t it? That’s why I’m always far more interested in what people say on here. Normal people using a the car every day. Having said that, I’d love to see what Vicki Butler Henderson thinks of the CS or CS45.
