Remove the part and the number will be somewhere on the inside, moulded in.
To help you find it, the number should start with something like 5G0, or 5G1, followed by 2 groups of 3 numbers.
-
I've always referred to these parts as the upper and lower steering column cowlings.
And yes, they will have a part number on, the last 2 digits are the colour code IIRC.
-
thanks for your help, is this job difficult to do or would it best i take it to VW Dealer
thanks again

No real knowledge of removing these on a MK7.5 golf, but normally there's 2 or 3 screws on the underside of the lower cowling to remove then then the upper and lower are held together by some retaining clips and should come apart with a bit of a pull.
Relatively easy to do.
Maybe have a look in the workshop manua, its in the repair section, body, body interior section, here https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=287703.0

thanks will down load it when i get home from work , so just a quicky i wont have to remove the steering wheel
then ?
-
Not sure, looking in the manual it shows the steering wheel removed, but you may be able to access the screws without removing the wheel.
Screws could be accessible if you turn the steering wheel left or right??
-
thanks not getting car until wednesday will take a look then
thanks for your very helpful input

If it’s like the passat then there’s 3 torx (t25 I think) then 2 behind the steering wheel where the 2 bits of plastic meet (cowl)
Don’t need to take them off on the golf in my job but do on passat
-
So just two screws and don’t have to take steering wheel off. That’s good news.
Just need to source the part now.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated
-
Looks like it doesn’t have screws behind steering wheel on a 2013-2017
Part number 5G0858566F

Thanks for pic , picking car up in the morning. White/silver 245 pp.
Will take a look then at lower column and see what’s going on
Cheers You been great help

You'd need to double check the part number if it has keyless entry or normal entry with an ignition barrel. Be best to just ring a Volkswagen parts department and get them to use your vin to find it. I need to do the same job but couldn't be bothered taking the steering wheel off.

how badly scratched is your plastic
-
Badly enough, ideally there would be no scratches.

will they polish out do you think ?
-
Any attempt to polish out the scratches would also polish away the texture of the plastic and will, IMO, look far worse.
I dont think steering cowlings are particularly expensive.

They're around £70-85 for both pieces from memory. A heat gun a grain pad would fix it, but it's in a location with a mix of materials and key electrical components so personally wouldn't try it and if I were removing it to do it I'd just buy the new cowl.
-
yes replace would be good idea and dont mind buying one , its taking steering wheel off is bothering me
might ask vw garage how much for parts and labour ?
thanks

I can remember this plastic dye being recommended on Detailing World forum a few years ago. Might be a viable alternative to replacing the trim?

As a temporary fix, some plastic interior trim dressing products might help mask light scratches. Would probably need to be reapplied on a regular basis though to continue masking the scratches.

It's not from a ring, it's from blindly prodding at the ignition with the key. Ask me how I know... :embarrassed:

clean it with a magic eraser then buy a china graph pencil n colour the marks in. it does actually work this!!
