Hi all,
Just been on the phone with DTD and they told me that their offer for the CS45 is only valid today. Presume this is usual salesman twaddle. Never ordered through them but finding it very difficult to get CS45 discounts unlike my previous cars.
Thanks in advance.
-
Oh and the part ex I’m getting from dealers is mind blowing. £27000 but holding the valuation until a car arrives. WBAC are offering more but not with a 20-26 week wait. I only paid £30k for my R new because of the discount achievable on a late 7.5 R. Mental.
-
On the part ex, there is massive demand for LEZ compliant second hand cars. Its caused such a surge in demand coupled with the supply being super low due to lockdown.
Losing 3k in 2 years on a car #winning
-
Exactly Fred. I’ve had dealers phoning me asking if I’m selling my car. It’s crazy and I wasn’t really ready to change but it seems crazy not to. If that makes sense!
-
Used car valuations seem abnormally high right now, so if you're contemplating a new one now could be a good time to swap as long as you can still get a decent discount and crucially, a sensible lead time.
If AutoTrader is to believed, my GTD has only dropped by about £1,300 in the 18 months since I bought it. However at the start of the first lockdown it was a different story.

It’s cause the dealer my be after closing a quota of cars that will need ordering. If he finishes it then your offer is out.
Suprised have had trouble getting money off, I got nearly £6k off mine

Motorway.co.uk
Or
Wizzle
If selling your car.
Wbac have to pay Philip Schofield his cut

No trouble with DTD but local dealers. It’s not discountable etc. Normally dealers who are willing to match too.

These two offered more but without the security of the 5 plus month wait the offer will surely change. Dealers are willing to honour it.

Another consideration here is if you think the offers from the car buying sites will continue to rise. My offers have increased for my MK7.5 R by £5000 since April. I guess it's a gamble really but I'm going to wait it out anyway and see. It's all about supply and demand so I guess if the current shortage of pretty much everything continues then the price of these used cars will continue to rise.
I don't want to buy another car while I'm waiting for mine to be built so I'll just keep the R and sell it for what it's worth at the time.
Also would it be silly to sell for a good price then pay a premium for something else kind of defeats the object but then again my new car price is fixed so that goes in my favour.
-
Those used prices are nuts - I've just accepted £17150 for my 2 year old Polo GTI+, that I paid £20700 for (RRP £24240 at the time). Amazing how they're all bumped up by (partially) the word shortage of chips as a result of covid closures. I was going to go with Motorway, but I've heard they chip away at prices to a lesser extent than WBAC, so sold it to the place that took my R. Great time to chop a newish car in.

Sell the old one, get the new one, and if used prices continue to rise, sell the new one. At some point somethings got to give - while you can still order a new one, there's got to be a tangible difference between the new and nearly new car.
-
Yeah chips, covid and LEZ.... Perfect storm.
But you can only cash in on it if you don't need your car because likely as not you won't be able to get a new one because of the chip problem. Its a massive problem and caused by the car industry not playing by the same rules as the consumer technology one... Which means they get dumped when the chips are scarce because they aren't priority because they only want to do JIT and not order a gazillion at a time...

Ive used motorway twice now. Both on 4 yr old cars. Both times got exactly what the top offer on the website offered. I guess it all depends what the dealer who gave the best offer is like. I had no issues. Both times a dealer salesman came out simply walked round, sat inside, then said right lets get the paperwork done. Ive asked before if they wanted to look at it further and had the responce they would prep it anyway.
Wbac went round the first car with a fine toothcomb and knocked a huge chunk off the offer price. Didnt ho back for the second car.

Some interesting replies guys. If I can secure a good discount I’m going to change. I’ll have £5k equity in the car at a potential October delivery date, more if it goes on longer with them holding the part ex for me. Seems mad. Used prices might hold, might go up or down but I like to know what’s in front of me when making a financial decision so it’s a bit of a no brainer.
-
From what I understand if the dealer is making you that offer and holding it, can you not just see when the time comes if the car buying sites offer better value? You can't lose then.
Did you try DTD again today and ask if the offer on the 45 is still available? Seems unreasonable tactics to try and pressure sell to you when it's on their configurator.
-
Good point. I’ll definitely try that.
Ideally I want to find a dealer who comes near DTD. It did feel like pressure tactics at the time.

I got a deal at Murrays VW for my Golf R Performance Pack which matched a quote I originally got from Coast2Coast. Also Evo1984 on this very forum was an absolute legend and also very kindly matched the quote as well.
-
Thanks for the info. If Lee is at Cheltenham, it’s a fair drive for me still. Might be worth a shot. I’ve got a few dealers I’m speaking to this week.

Thanks for shout out 👍🏻 I’m still here had a few weeks off work but would love to take an order for one of those stunning cars

V interesting about present used values. Last autumn I got a quote from Motorway offering me £21k for my 2019 GTI Performance DSG, metallic, DCC , 12,000 miles, me as the only owner from new.
I was absolutely shocked! Not to say highly offended........
-
Yes, no demand during the mass lockdown.... but less lockdown, less chips and the new LEZ's all combine to make it super hot prices.

I was offered the same, £21K from Motorway for a 2016 plate Golf R MK7 with similar mileage.
-
So I just tried again.......£24,600.
I paid £28,000 27 months ago and have actually done 16,000 miles.
Very happy with a £3,400 drop.
But I plan to keep for a while.

I’ve had another dealer phone out of the blue today asking if I’d consider selling my R. This is getting crazy.

I had my local BMW dealership call me and ask if I wanted to sell my BMW.... the BMW they never sold me and I didn't buy anywhere else...
-
You should have sold it to them Fred, cash up front!
-
Does anyone know if these quotes from the likes of WBAC, Motorway, Autotrader etc take into account factory options, or are they unaware of them and just assume you have a bog-standard car?

They usually ask you about optional extras, but most optional extras have zero residual value anyway.

It was tempting.... especially as I don't like them very much.
Just goes to show though how the market is super hot and how organisations are crap at maintaining customer databases...

I get calls like that - asking me why I didn't claim compensation for that accident I had (that they have no details for).

Most factory options probably make very little difference to the valuations offered by the likes of WBAC - I doubt they’re even aware of them from the details you input on their websites. I’d say it’s also very unlikely that they’d adjust their indicative valuation upwards to reflect options when they see the car either - more likely they’ll reduce it if they find a small paint chip or scratch that wasn’t declared when the indicative valuation was provided. Those options do make a difference to the dealer resale price though, as they make the car more attractive to prospective buyers.

Now that’s the kind of professionalism we need. 😂

Trouble is, dealers generally offer less than Motorway in the first place. Got the impression they were unaware of the optioned wheels on my Polo GTI+ and when I mentioned them, didn't change their price at all.

For your average family car that's true, but I imagine well optioned performance Golfs are always more desirable over bog standard. When the dealers come to sell your car they won't hesitate to advertise these options and price accordingly.

True, a well optioned car will be more desirable, and will probably mean it’ll be on a dealer’s forecourt at a higher sale price than a less well optioned equivalent car of a similar age / mileage. However, it won’t mean a car buying service such as WBAC or Motorway or a motor trader will offer you more than they would for a less well optioned car - the likelihood is they won’t - and as Fred has said, most extra cost options have low or no residual value if a buyer uses a car buying service to dispose of their car.
-
More desirable? Maybe... but remember we are talking about a trade buy price, not a retail price - that flattens the price and as I said, only some things actually mark up even the sticker price.
Whether the salesman tries to tell you that "those 90% tints are a rare option" or "look its in a pearl colour, how lovely" actually makes zero odds and he hasn't even marked it up in the first place vs another of the same age/condition/mileage GTI.
Really, don't fool yourself, the options you pick are pretty much money lossed straight away unless you sell to someone privately.

Meant to say ‘more desirable to prospective buyers’ - especially if they consider certain options as must-haves. Agree, options such as 90% tints won’t make a car more desirable in the eyes of the motor trade than a car without them, nor will they have any impact on sticker price.
I never go crazy with the options list when I buy a car because I’m aware most options lose most - if not all of their value, and the cars on my shortlist tend to be pretty well specc’d so I rarely feel the need to add too much. On my current car, I paid for larger alloys, reversing camera and an extra cost paint colour.
-
Things that definitely DO make a difference are Performance Pack.... that definitely makes sense, you'd have been crazy to buy a Mk7 GTI from new without it.
Not because OMG 1000000mph, but simply because it really is THAT much more desirable down the line.
Sunroof maybe, leather maybe..... its the things which let people see what they are getting. But the "extra" will be a fraction of what you paid for it.
DCC....rear camera...park assist...navpro...HK...heated seats... meh can't see it, won't pay for it. Wheels? Nope, tyres are more expensive, wheels can easily be changed.
-
At the end of the day, for some buyers it’s not necessarily all about the initial cost or retained value of options, and which are the ‘right’ options to go for. There’ll be an enjoyment factor associated with certain options for some buyers that add to the overall ownership experience of a car, and that’s something they’re prepared to pay extra for, irrespective of what - if any - impact those options have on the car’s value come sale time. I dare say that quite often, they won’t be the most sensible options if viewed purely from a financial perspective.
I dare say that buyers of nearly new used examples of any car make / model will be very grateful to the first owner if they plundered the options list to satisfy their need to max out on that enjoyment factor .

Oh for sure, I've got a pile of massive depreciation boxes ticked. Some days some of them I even think might be worth it

A local dealer matched Coast2coast today and will honour a £27k trade in even if the car is late. Deal done.

Congratulations on your order. Nice to have the piece of mind that your trade in price is locked too.

Oh and a massive thank you to Lee (evo1986) who put a brilliant offer forward.
