Title: Privacy Settings
Post by: valentino on 30 May 2021, 14:34
Hi, whats everyone using as regard to privacy settings? Mine is on maximum, when i try to put it on a lesser setting, it seems to comply on the screen, but when i come out of that screen it goes back to maximum. Does it have to be reset every time the ignition is switched on?

I leave mine on minimum....because if you don't then other things stop working.

Its just a stupid German thing and you are never "private" in a digital world anyway and never will be.

I find this `Primary User` thing a nightmare, I just want to get in and drive the car! Can anyone tell me how I can just re-set the cars system so I can drive the car as `Guest`? Before I set up the `Primary User`the cars systems worked fine, now, I get all sorts happen, settings change, the mode display wont show up on the screen....Also varies with both keys, one key does one thing to the car, the other doesn't   - All I want to do is reset the system to how it left factory, please can someone help??

The settings are tied to the key you use - definitely!

As "guest" you definitely won't get any sort of settings persistence either...

You can reset the car, go into the settings and do a factory reset.

If that doesn't work you can go full nuclear - go into the MyVW/WeConnect website, delete the car from your profile.

In fact, I had to do this in order to become primary user in the first place, because it wasn't working. Delete car, re-add car from VIN. Goto car, login with my VW password, click "become primary user", enter my S-PIN, authenticate with both car keys.

After that, when it next asks you to enter your S-PIN (ie next time you start the car from cold), enter it and tick the box saying "don't ask me again".

Should be fine after that.

There continues to be changes on VW's servers that cause this problem, they are messing with things daily/weekly that cock stuff up. Its super unstable.

Thanks Fredgroves, you certainly are the source of all knowledge!!

Do I actually need to register as a Primary User or can i just go the full nuclear method and run as Guest? It seemed to go down hill with all the issues cropping up when I decided to brave it and register as the Primary User, so needles to say I'm reluctant to do that again!!

How can I reset the keys to factory settings? Or does the full nuclear method do that as well??

Thanks again for the help, tearing my hair out with it!

How do you get the setting to be on anything other than maximum. As i said it goes on max as soon as i come out of the screen even though i have set it minimum?--is there something else to press before coming out of the setting screen?

If you do a factory reset on the car it should forget everything and be just like it came off of the production line.

No key profiles, nothing. L

Thanks Fred. Tried the spare key, switched the ignition on and off a few times, and so far its holding the chosen setting

Thank you, will give that a go! When you say factory reset, you mean the method of deleting from WeConnect or the in car reset?

Guess the keys have to be in the car if the in car reset is done... :nerd:

In the car, go into settings, there is a factory reset option. I sets everything back to zero.

If you want to try and get the login working again, you'll need to do the other bit and delete the car from WeConnect (website) and re-add using the VIN....

OK, I have deleted the car from MyVW account now...

Will now reset the car to factory default....I am hoping this will then reset the keys so when I get in and use either key my preferred setting will be retained?

Will the necessary software updates over the air still occur if the vehicle is used in the Guest menu and which Privacy mode will the car need to be in for these to take place?

Apologies for all the questions, just want this sorted now and I don`t want to be going to a dealer for the answers!

Fairly sure as guest it doesn't store anything, but it might. If it does then it's probably going to associate it with a key...

OK, will try that latter and see what happens, fingers are crossed tightly!

Without logging in I suspect you might not get updates to the map (about the only ota update it does) because that is associated with you as the owner.

You might also get bongs about traffic hazard detection not being available, which is caused by car2x not having your permission to chatter with stuff.

OK, thanks for the heads up, don`t use nav or car2x so not to worried if they don`t update...what I am more concerned/confused about is why the 2 keys have different settings stored in them?!

It's only that the key has a unique id associated with two different banks of settings. Isn't it easy enough to just use one key? I have one on the keyring with some other keys that I use everyday and another in a cupboard as the spare. Can't remember when I've ever just had both knocking around with any car ever...

I was having all sorts of issues with setting myself as Primary User and the privacy settings always going back to Incognito was one of the symptoms.  I tried all sorts until a factory reset of the Infotainment was the only thing I could think of, short of taking the car in. I did the factory reset and I was able to set Primary User and I have had no issues with the settings since.

I gave up messing around with primary user registration as the car does remember key specific settings in guest mode.
Mirror dip, rear wiper in reverse deactivation, aircon sync, individual mode and such like are all remembered.
As I don’t use ACC or nav I’m not in the slightest bit bothered with registering as primary user once the initial curiosity vanished.

In fact as time has gone on (touch wood) my random bings and bongs have lessened to near none.
I do wonder how many mk8’s were rejected though going by some of the issues I’ve seen reported.
All I tend to get now is an occasional blank radio/media screen which is easily resolved.

Yeah, I’ve cursed it now by writing that.

another thing that makes the Golf 8 poor - ive given up on mine, roll on time to change it but realistically, i cant justify the expense for at least 12-18months.....
Its not all bad though as it's helped me decide what to get next.... anything bar another one! ha

Thank Exonian, think you've summed up my stance there! I also messed with the Primary User set up purely out of curiosity, however, with the issues I'm now getting just want to have the car back to factory, use as Guest and cross my fingers for the best!

Hoping that resetting everything to factory then starting afresh will be the answer to my issues!

I have tried to restore the car to factory settings today after deleting the Primary User, however, I have a message appear that says ; "Sorry, unable to restore infotainment system to its factory settings"

Any ideas from anyone? I've tried 3 or 4 times now......
