Title: Excessive brake dust?
Post by: joe6 on 28 May 2021, 20:05
Quite a lot of advice on cleaning brake dust off wheels but not my specific query. I seem to get a lot of brake dust on the front wheels on the mk7.5. Brake the same way as usual not excessive. Never had this with the mk6. Is it brake pad composition these days or do I have a potential problem? Car has done 4500 miles.

Any means of jacking up each front wheel and checking if the brakes could be binding?

Hi madstaff Had the wheels off recently to clean and polish and seemed fairly free. Worth checking again though.

The standard pads do create a lot of brake dust.

Worth a bit of research but some aftermarket ones are lots better in that respect.

The standard pads do create a lot of brake dust.

This has been my experience too, my front wheels are usually caked in it.

I had the same problem with my B7 A4 quattro, and changing to Brembo pads improved the situation quite a bit.

I don't think the Brembo's were even particularly good in that regard, I just think the OEM pads are really bad, lol.

Thanks for the comments. Obviously need to find feedback on various makes. Can't afford to try the market.🤔

An update. Checked the front wheels and caliper pins for free movement and all ok. I think the shape of the inner side of the parker wheels throws the brake dust towards the front of the wheel unlike the monza on my mk 6 and this gives the illusion of excessive brake dust.

When I was changing my pads on my previous Golf I thought about using ceramic pads which claim to have less dust, in the end I didn't buy them so can't prove one way or the other.

Don't know if they make a performance version.
