Hi
Just been out and checked my battery again with the OBDeleven and got a reading of 11.3V again. Since i keep getting these readings and my stop/start hasn't worked for a couple of months now I think it's time for a new battery. I have a Pro OBD11 licence so it's ready to go
Which battery would everyone recommend?. Searching on here seems to suggest I should go for an AGM battery. Sounds like it might need some modification to fit in the car correctly?. Also if it matters, I don't drive the car daily and it's more of a weekend car as I have a work van. I'm going for a long drive Saturday so a bit worried about it not starting, shame I couldn't change it before I go.
I saw this Bosch Battery (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-0-092-S5-A-080-Rechargeable-Starter-Battery/dp/B00SJ97O6W/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=io2wy&pf_rd_p=dc48a86e-e8e6-463b-b5a6-be2ccfb37ec3&pf_rd_r=BHVV8446W1GKM4NGRCZX&pd_rd_r=4892d4d2-a7af-44ce-bcf8-2883f6681a63&pd_rd_wg=7nVlC&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_d) recommended on here.
Alternatively, Halfords have a few AGM ones (https://www.halfords.com/search?q=agm+battery) but they're own brand, any good?. I do have a trade card
Any help is greatly appreciated

Just replied in the other thread.

I've got the Halfords AGM battery in mine. So far so good. I believe it's actually made by Yuasa and it has a 5 year warranty 👍
If you're going to fit it yourself the Bosch AGM battery also has a 5 year warranty and is another good option.
Thanks . Which one of the Halfords batteries do you have? Ones £120 and the other is £160
Bosch ones £151 on Amazon but I haven’t looked elsewhere for it yet

This one is the same as mine

I did think about buying this and OBD11 and fitting myself, although the price does seem to have gone up a little since I last checked

This is the one I got a few years ago and it has been faultless. Cheaper (119.97 inc delivery) than Halfords one (£127.20) above even with the trade card

I went for the Halfords AGM battery as it has a 5 year warranty. I'm not sure how successful a warranty claim would be in practice, but for a few extra quid I thought it was worth it for the extra peace of mind.

Thanks for the replies
Are all those AGM batteries a straight swap? Will they fit in the OEM material battery cover etc?.
I've seen some people say things needs modifying but not sure if that's because they're fitting an even larger battery or not

The detail you need for a mk7 GTi is a type 096 battery, this determines the dimension/size of the unit.
Most have the same terminals as supplied on the VW original fitment, check that before ordering, just to be really sure, it is an off chance?
You can them make the choice over AGM/EFB and variances in cranking power available across different manufacturers.
I assume you have read about Agm & EFb already?
If not;

You can slide the terminal covers off the OEM battery and they will fit directly over the top of the terminals on the Halfords AGM battery.
You can also use the OEM protective 'coat' from the old battery too to put around your new battery as it's held together with velcro.
As Clubsport mentions, the battery type is 096. Look for compatibility with stop/start systems.

Will the Halfords battery be a straight swap or require coding with my OBD11 ?

it needs coding, can affect stop/start if not 👍

Hi, apologies to bring up old thread.
My original battery gave up yesterday morning, after 7 years / 65k miles.
I managed to get a replacement Varta AGM battery delivered this morning and swopped it over. All seems fine after all the initial Christmas tree of errors and lights on the first start up. A short drive and all the errors cleared. I then switched the engine off and back on again. All seems fine - happy days.
Now got me thinking do I still need to get the new battery coded? I haven’t got the kit to do this, but car seems fine for now at least?
Thanks in advance!
-
It's better to get the battery coded if you can to ensure the car recognises it as a new battery and that the battery type is AGM.
You may well be ok as is, but if it's coded correctly then at least you'll know for sure.
-
A quick Google search says you may be ok if you're swapping an AGM battery that was coded for a new AGM battery. But if you're swapping from lead-acid to AGM then it should be coded as it may have different charge cycles.
Also, the car may think it has the old faulty battery still in the car and that could causing under or overcharging of the battery causing it to fail faster or the car not to start. Another website says alternator failure can be caused by not coding a new battery but not sure how true that is
If you know someone with an OBD11, Carista, or similar then it might be worth asking them for help coding it
Since im posting this message already I have an update on my faulty battery - Every time I check it the battery charge is around 11.5v but it still starts first time every time and I've had no issues at all. I've turned off stop/start to try and help it but that wasn't working anyway
-
Is the 11.5V on OBDEleven or a decent multimeter directly at the poles?

Tested with mustimeter the other day and it said 12.3v. 5 min later the OBD11 said 11.7V so doesn't seem to be completely accurate. I'm still keeping an eye on the battery level every now and again but disabling stop/start with the OBD might've helped
