Title: Mk8 Golf Spats - 5H08078339B9 + 5H08078349B9
Post by: willni on 19 May 2021, 11:14
Hello Folks,

Has anyone tried to install the Mk8 GTI 'Spats' to the Mk7/7.5? (Items 14 & 23)

Looking at this page -

it looks as though they are attatched with double sided "badge" tape which providing they follow the same sort of contour as a MK7.5 should be a doddle to fit as no drilling or anything like that is neccesary.

Cheers Madstaff, ordered a set for the rear so we'll soon see.

Where do those go?

They aren't on my car... are they an optional mud flap type part?

Are you in Ireland?

I don't think they're an option since they're on the mk8 GTI, I'll be using it as a mini mudflap & for more aggressive look, I think it's actually for aero dynamics.

Yes, I'm in Northern Ireland

Oh hang on, those are the "winglets" for Mk8's with factory 19's.

I have those on my Mk8 GTI.

They are just a tiny extension used to get around that the 235 tyres project wider than the wheel arches.... which is illegal without them.

Out of curiosity what did you think they were?

Just because we can appreciate the fine Volkswagen accessories catalog, unlike you uncouth beasts   Next you'll try and take our CB Aerials!.

I had no idea what you were talking about, we've (on the Mk8 forum) always called them "winglets" or "arch extenders".

CB Aerials? Big springy whippy ones? Is CB actually a thing still?

I've only seen them before on a C63 and never knew what they'd be called technically, website called them Spats but I think arch lips (Not the Bishops) is easier to understand.

Indeed the big springy ones, we love a bit of Smokey & the Bandit.

I worked with a young lady in the early 1980’s and she was into the whole CB scene in a big way. I remember she was visited by the long arm of the law for having illegal, unlicensed equipment . She wasn’t very discreet as she had a massive CB aerial (i think it was a ‘twig’ in CB language) in her parent’s back garden.

Back on topic - those little winglets or spats are officially known as wheel spoilers, wheel arch spoilers or wheel arch lip spoilers.

Half/full wave aerials (massive aerial) and burners (transmit side amplifiers).... takes me back

That and visits from the DTI

Nice bit of research in the first post Will but “no, no, no, no, no and no”
Why make a fantastic looking car look a bit sh1t by fitting those?
They look awful on an already visually challenged car (mk8) and would look even worse on a handsome mk7(.5)

Save the money or put it in the forum charity instead.

I didn't know there was a charity section, I usually have a few bits I'd not both posting for sale for myself but would for charity.

It's just to scratch the itch to see what'd they'd look like, highly likely they'll just be return and I'll swap it for a few new original factory stickers as a few are a bit worn now and need replaced.

Update for those interested, they do fit and would offer a bit of protection to the edge. But I'm not fitting them not my cup of tea.

Up for sale on the For Sale section if anyone wants to make a donation for them

You should find someone who wants them - for a Mk8 you need them if you upgrade from those terrible standard 18's and I know getting hold of those parts is actually quite tricky.

From what I’ve read they’re just glued on.
Very hot water and a wiggle if so.

Thanks I did have a quick look today and feels like the fronts are screwed on, I will check with wheels off when weather improves.
