Title: brake disc run out again
Post by: mossy69 on 13 March 2021, 17:13
hi there sorry to come back at you guys about this problem once again over the last 2 years I've had 4 sets of front brake discs and pads ,the last set were vw discs and pads and they have done the same after about 2000 miles ,I'm a light braker too, I was just after info on what you are using ie expensive grooved discs or pads or even a better make than vw if there is such a thing...ive also had the front end all checked for either drop links and honestly everything is as it should be from an independent vw Audi specialist in Newcastle swift engineering ......im puzzled to say the least. cheers once again

If by run out,you mean warped-I had this issue with my Mk 4,way back.
I had my front discs changed (genuine parts) and then had them replaced due to them warping,a couple of months later.
I bought a set of Montreal 2 alloys, which according to the seller were lovely and straight, after he had them powder coated-they looked great-but they weren’t straight.
As daft as it may sound,I put the problem down to them being buckled.

So you've had it checked by some experts.. What did they think was wrong?

Surely if you are fitting oem parts and they are failing like you say it can't be a faulty part to start with, not that many faulty ones.

There has to be something else because vw golfs are hardly a rare car and everyone would be shouting about it otherwise.

I'm fairly sure most golf owners get vw brakes fitted when they wear out too..

Definitely something wrong with your set up, I'm on the original disks and pads after 42k miles!

As Fred says, I would be taking it back to where the work was done and having a right old moan, if you did them yourself I would be going back to the supplier as they are certainly not fit for purpose.

I highly doubt you've had 4 sets of faulty discs.

The problem could be a number of things -

The caliper/s are seized, overheating the disc/s and warping them.

The hub face where the disc mounts has not been cleaned properly so the disc is not sitting correctly on the hub.

The hub itself is bent.

You have a worn suspension joint.

Run out from the hub is probably the number one cause. Either it's mangled or the surface is corroded and uneven.

Over torqued wheel bolts.
Even too much paint on the inside of a refurbed wheel can cause runout.
Just been having a look into this on Google.

I had a similar issue on the X5 and went through a number of discs until finding the hub face was causing runout. Get the face cleaned off properly and then see.
