Title: Looking for a GTI or PP
Post by: Refurbished. on 20 February 2021, 22:15
Hi, I’ve just sold my JCW Mini. Great little car. I put 13k on it and it never missed a beat. I’d like a GTI as my next car. Recently bought a Boxster and got a great car from a forum member. I’m hoping to do the same here.
I’d like a facelift 5 door GTI with DSG and high spec. First choice would be a blue or grey. Happy to consider other colours as well. However, car must have under 10k miles and I’d prefer to buy from the original owner.
I’ll pay a little more for a PP car as well.
Please let me know if you have something you are willing to sell. I’m ready to buy now.

Under 10k miles ? That’s surely going to make your list very small

It does narrow the pool down a bit on Auto Trader! I’d rather buy privately than from a dealer. Owners who use forums tend to be particularly discerning so I was hoping someone here would be looking to sell. I’ve posted some questions, but like an Olympic level numb nut, I’ve posted in the for sale section...doh!

These were my questions if anyone wants to contribute-

I’d be grateful for some advice from
Current owners. In no particular order-
Is the Dynaudio a good system?
Is DCC particularly worth seeking out?
I viewed a car earlier and the owner told me it had a heated front screen. I couldn’t see the filaments in the windscreen (could see them on my just sold Mini) does the Golf use a similar system as is the screen cleared by some other mystical means?
Finally, I think I’m ready to embrace an auto. Is the PP particularly worth seeking out over a standard car?

Thanks for sharing your experience

Yes the vw heated screen has really fine wires. Hard to see. Not like the old Ford ones or even the mini ones.

That’s useful. I thought the seller mistaken!

The climate screens have no wires, they use a thin foil layer between inner and outer layers of glass. I have this in my car and if you find a car with it then it's certainly worth having. But the blowers whacked on full for a few minutes will still do a reasonable job of clearing the screen in moderately cold conditions.

The non-performance version of the GTi was discontinued by VW late 2018, i'd therefore expect most cars with less than 10k miles on will be the Performance version by default.

Can't really comment on the other options as I don't have them, but they will further reduce the pool of cars available if having them is a deal breaker.

I have 18 inch wheels on my car, and in my opinion DCC isn't necessary. But comfort is something that is subjective so others will say it's a must.

Ah OK, that's why I've never seen the wires! I do know you can't see them like Ford or mini.

Welcome.
Whether to seek out options depends on the buyer- in particular how is the buyer going to use the car and what does he/she expect- rather than the quality of the option being considered

From what I’ve read on this forum and elsewhere, all the options you mention are good.

I have dynaudio. It is excellent.

My car is garaged overnight. I don’t need a heated screen.

I have 18 inch wheels, I don’t use the car on track nor on really poor roads- so I don’t need the versatility that DCC offers.

Dynaudio is... dissappointing. But quite a lot better than the standard system. That said, I'm quite into car audio and always upgraded my speakers, headunit (when you still could) and added at least one subwoofer, and listen to very bass heavy music (dnb/jungle, hip hop, techno, house, etc). The Dynaudio stuff has ok sound quality but massively lacks bass.

Why must it be under 10k miles?

I always try to buy very low mileage cars. Many take a different view and you pay a premium. However, consumables show minimal wear with low mileage and others subsequently see the value when you come to sell. My Mini was well specced and still low mileage when I sold it. Those factors make it stand out in a sea of other, similar cars for sale.

As I say, there are other arguments to be made for other rationales, which I respect. This mindset has served me well for many years though.

Though i say it’s excellent, I agree with much of this.

Have you sold the Renault 5 then?

Low mileage cars are out there....!

Our 2019 PP has 2600 miles on the clock due to her WFH for a year now...!

I have to make a concious effort to either take it for a run at the weekend or hook it up to the CTEK for a while....

But it isn't for sale sorry, the missus won't part with it....

The climate screen doesn’t have any wires at all. It’s a conductive layer of silver. You’ll notice it has a slightly weird colour tint to it from the outside under certain light.

Best hold onto mine then, 26 months old with 9400 on the clock. Absolutely love the car, the keys will only be taken from my cold, grey dead fingers. I have the heated screen, you can always tell as they have a slightly amber tinge at a certain angle when viewed from the outside.

I have never driven so few miles before - combination of being a homeworker 3 months after I picked it up and then the lockdowns, but it’s sort of nice just to have a car for fun?

Most miles I have ever put on a car was 120k in 21 months - 1992 1.6L Cavalier.

Sell it to me. I’ll pay more than any garage and you can buy something special!

I’d rather sell a kidney and my firstborn - I adore that car.

I am in a similar situation, I bought my brand new MK7.5 69 plate PP GTI just over a year ago, and have only covered 2,800 miles to date, due mainly to lockdowns and change of priorities in this last 12 months. Would love to get out and drive it, but can only travel locally current restrictions.

😂 I actually listened to some early 90s jungle today- for the first time in years. Brought back some good memories!

These were my questions if anyone wants to contribute-

I’d be grateful for some advice from
Current owners. In no particular order-
Is the Dynaudio a good system? YES! it was a must for me after trying the standard system.
Is DCC particularly worth seeking out? I keep mine in comfort at all times, one downside is the shocks are more expensive to replace but I'd probably spec it if buying new.
I viewed a car earlier and the owner told me it had a heated front screen. I couldn’t see the filaments in the windscreen (could see them on my just sold Mini) does the Golf use a similar system as is the screen cleared by some other mystical means? as mentioned already, you can't see any wires like you can on fords however when viewed from certain angles you'll see the screen is a purple colour. It's called a climate screen - mine has this and 90% tints and it does a really good job at keeping the interior from becoming unbearable in summer
Finally, I think I’m ready to embrace an auto (the manual is better IMO, although the dsg is very good. You won't be disappointed with either). Is the PP particularly worth seeking out over a standard car?1000%, I simply wouldn't entertain one without. A MUST!

Thanks for sharing your experience

don't limit yourself with the mileage, it's just a number on a dashboard. Buy on condition and history. Mine was higher mileage than I would've liked but I purchased it from a forum member on here who used it to travel up and down the motorway to different clients, it was immaculate with full spec but was on 30k at 18 months old. There was no way I was letting it slip through my fingers because it had more miles than I'd liked, especially with the spec and condition it was in!

Is DCC particularly worth seeking out?
I love the DCC in mine (2014 GTI PP). Like others I keep mine in comfort a lot, but I find it invaluable at high speed on rough motorways. It can really smooth out a skittish ride, but gives you the option to actually feel something when you want to. Recommend.

Finally, I think I’m ready to embrace an auto. Is the PP particularly worth seeking out over a standard car?
I personally feel the difference of the electronic diff, it really hooks up coming out of corners on heavy throttle, very confidence inspiring. However, not sure whether this now comes standard. The big brake kit that came with my PP is also impressive, but there is not the world of difference in my opinion (apart from the red callipers). I still think the PP is worth it.
