Title: Mk7 golf R intercooler on mk 7 golf gti
Post by: Ordainedduke on 28 January 2021, 21:56
Looking for some expert advice I have a stage 1 mk7 gti to 300bhp, I'm going to put an upgrade intercooler unit would a mk7 R intercooler be a better bet for it and any gains, any problems, not long in the Golf field and would welcome any input

The R factory intercooler won't serve any real benefit and would be a waste of money to be honest.

Have a look here http://mygolfmk7.com/mk7-gti-r-intercooler-comparison/

I'm not expert, but intercooling upgrades would recover power loss from heat gain caused by the engine itself heating up.

That's got to be a variable on the ambient air intake temp? ie if the air was 10C you'd suffer less power loss than if it was 40C outside.

I'm not sure that UK temperatures warrant it at "just" 300bhp do they?

(assuming you are in the UK that is)

Have you got an upgraded downpipe on already?

If I were you i'd go for an aftermarket inter- cooler. I'm on stage 2 9340 bhp)mk7 and have a forge one
I also have a 3" downpipe.

It's a ball ache of a job, I'd fit something far better than any of the OEM options if I was going to do it.

Or maybe go for something like the Forge Twintercooler, easier to fit and still pretty effective.

The cost of the forge twincooler to then still be making use of the fine/thin core of the stock cooler is pretty negligible to be honest.

If you are really motivated to change the cooler then any aftermarket full cooler replacement would suffice.

Not saying it's necessary at that power level but if you
want to upgrade it anyway, then by all means have a look for an aftermarket cooler that had a thicker and more dense core to dissipate the heat.

I was making 360hp on the stock GTi intercooler however back to back runs resulting in heatsoak.
I lost roughly 25hp on the second run as the stock cooler doesn't suffice at that level of power/airflow.

I have since gone with a true FMIC setup which sees consistent low intake air temperatures even when running through the gears around mountain passes. On average in boost I'll see intake air temps of 8c above ambient.
